ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Accurately prepare, administer and document medications as prescribed; Immediately report any errors to Charge Nurse or Director of Nursing
Accurately take and record vital signs
Accurately count and sign medication administration record for controlled drugs
Safely lift, move and transfer residents as required. This involves the ability to safely transfer residents who cannot bear their own weight. It also involves the ability to safely perform movements such as pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, kneeling, reaching and lifting in excess of 150 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations; manual dexterity required performing tasks in assisting residents with their personal needs
Observe all residents and report anything unusual or abnormal to Charge Nurse; ability to safely care for residents in a patient and respectful manner despite some resident's lack of cooperation and/or combativeness
Follow safety guidelines; promptly remove and clean up urine or bowel excretions and other spills or safety hazards
Safely utilize equipment; Report any equipment needing service or repair immediately
Participate in emergency fire or disaster drills and other in-service training as scheduled; must be able to safely ascend and descend stairwells and assist in an evacuation
Follow Universal Safety Precautions in order to protect one self, residents and other staff members; must have the capability to withstand strong foul odors and the ability to tolerate wearing necessary personal protective equipment; willingness and ability to wear, tolerate and use protective clothing and equipment needed in the carrying out of duties, i.e. latex gloves

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Provides dental assistance services.
* Takes and records vital signs and other basic patient information.
* Sets up the appropriate instrument tray for dental procedures.
* Assists the dentist chair-side during dental procedures.
* Takes and develops dental x-rays per dentist instruction.
* Conducts preventive maintenance on the dental x-ray processor, hand pieces, and other dental equipment as necessary.
* Cleans and sterilizes dental instruments in operatories.
* Mixes impression materials and cements.
* Performs infection control procedures in the treatment room.
* Orders dental supplies as needed.
2. Maintains professional courtesy at all times.
3. Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Required
* Knowledge of advanced principles of oral health promotion, prevention and motivation.
* Knowledge of protocols in general and an ability to quickly gain specific knowledge of the Center's current operational protocols.
* Knowledge of dental terminology and appropriate abbreviations.
* Demonstrates knowledge of the Texas Dental Practice Act.
* Ability to document, with clarity, all information relevant to a patient's needs.
* Ability to effectively present information in small group situations to patients, Center staff, and the general public.
* Ability to use office equipment including but not limited to computers, fax machines, telephones and copiers.
Preferred
* Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred but not required.
Credentials and Experience
Required
* Current unrestricted registration from the Texas Board of Dental Examiners to practice as a dental assistant in the State of Texas.
* Current (CPR) Certification.
Preferred
* One (1) year of practice experience as a dental assistant providing direct patient care.
Special Requirements
The employee must be able to lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye/hand coordination. Requires sitting, standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. Requires frequent exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to work with a moderate noise level in the work environment is required.
