The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) is responsible for accurately administering and documenting medications to Heartspring students in a school and residential group home setting. This is a 2nd shift position, Monday - Thursday 1pm - 9pm.
Primary Functions
Verify accuracy of medications to be administered to students.
Setup, distribute, and document prescribed medications to students in the Heartspring School and residential group homes.
Ensure controlled substances are accurately tracked and signatures for any removals have been obtained prior to removal.
Assist with the preparation of medications for student travel days and parent visitations.
Administer insulin based on patient specific protocols.
Inventory on-hand medications and order refills as needed.
Assist with the delivery of medication refills for the group homes.
Ensure compliance with Kansas DCF regulations regarding medication storage and labeling.
Perform and record refrigerator temperature checks twice daily.
Inform Heartspring RN or APRN of any health-related concerns observed.
Audits medication records for error reports that are not turned in or completed.
Relay information and communication between the Medical Office and second shift and/or weekend direct care providers (DCPs) regarding medication changes or medically ordered treatments.
Secondary Functions
Perform vital sign, height, and weight checks as ordered or required.
Inventory and re-stock first aid kits in the group homes and classrooms on a monthly and as needed basis.
Check-in cycle fill medications and pharmacy deliveries as they arrive.
Other duties as may be assigned by supervisors.
Requirements
Educational, Training, and Licensure Requirements
Current Certified Medication Aide (CMA) or CertifiedNursing Assistance (CNA) certification preferred. Will consider training the right candidate.
Prefer six (6) months experience as CMA and/or CNA.
Prefer experience working with individuals with developmental complexities.
18 years of age or older.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Must have flexible work schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Must complete all required orientation and training conducted by Heartspring staff.
Must maintain current CPR certification.
Must maintain current NCI certification.
Qualifications
Prompt and regular attendance is required for this position.
Clear and professional verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent attention to detail and thoroughly complete assigned tasks.
Ability to enter accurate and timely information into a computer program or system using a keyboard.

Summary of Duties of the Certified Medication Aide

Documents medications administered on the MAR in accordance with Company policy; Checks MARs immediately after administration and prior to end of shift to ensure documentation is complete and accurate.
Conducts change of shift report with oncoming/outgoing shift personnel.
Maintains security of medication cart and narcotic keys during entire shift; Conducts narcotic count at the beginning and end of every shift in accordance with company policies and procedures.
Provides assistance with activities of daily living such as with bathing, dressing, personal hygiene (includes shaving, oral care, nail care, hair care, foot care), toileting, eating, and ambulation/mobility.
Works collaboratively with peers and other team members.
Maintains professional demeanor at all times when interacting with residents and families.
Reports any suspected or witnessed instances of verbal, mental, or physical abuse to licensed staff immediately.
Utilizes safe transfer techniques when assisting residents with mobility.
Observes and reports changes in residents' physical condition and cognitive/emotional status to Wellness Director or charge nurse, as needed.
Assists residents with swallowing difficulty with eating.
Responds to emergencies in a prompt and calm manner; Immediately reports such emergencies to the charge nurse and /or Wellness Director.
Understands and uses Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Standard Precautions, OSHA's Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens standard, and follows established infection control procedures, hazardous communication, and other safety rules.
Ensures cleanliness of residents' rooms and promptly reports all violations of safety and sanitation rules to supervisor.
Documents provision of services on company forms.
Operates designated medical equipment, copy, scan, fax machines, and telephone.
Non-Essential Functions of the Certified Medication Aide
Provides all necessary care and services to assigned residents and assists other wellness associates as needed.
Participates in and supports the resident-centered activities program.
Cares for sensory enhancement devices such as eyeglasses and hearing aids.
Completes housekeeping tasks such as bed-making, linen changes, vacuuming, emptying trash, and cleaning bathrooms.
Washes residents' laundry as needed.
Escorts residents and coordinates internal transportation needs.
Assists residents with personal correspondence/telephone use when requested.
Conducts room checks and resident rounds.
Monitors for environmental safety hazards.
Assists in a variety of tasks related to dining (escort residents to dining room, assist with set-up and clean tables, serve meals, bus tables, etc.).
Attends and participates in staff meetings and mandatory in-services.
Uses tactful, diplomatic communication techniques in potentially sensitive or emotionally charged situations.
Follows-up with appropriate staff, residents, or other individuals regarding reported complaints, problems, and concerns.
Acts as an ambassador and public relations representative to guests and other visitors.
Demonstrates an appreciation of the heritage, values and wisdom of the residents, and an understanding of the aging process.
Collaborates with associates in other departments to assure necessary care and services are provided.

Position Overview:

Must be sixteen (16) years of age.
Must be CertifiedNurseAide in Kansas.
Must be 18 years of age to operate or assist in the operation of most power-driven hoists-this includes those designed to lift and move patients.
Physical Requirements:
Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly.

Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Will be orientated to and maintain competence in working with patients in the following age categories:
Med/Surg/Skilled/ICU: Infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
OB: Neonate, adolescent, and adult patients.
OR, ED: Neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
TLC: Adult and geriatric patients.
Competence at the beginning of employment will be measured through observation during orientation and review of documentation. Ongoing competence will be measured through observation of clinical practice, observation for performance evaluation, and competency in-service. See attached sheet for other initial and ongoing competence required by each department.
Education:
NURSE ASSISTANT: High School Graduate (or its equivalency) desirable. Prefer: CNA
NURSE TECH: Current enrollment in a generic nursing program in preparation for registered nurse-licensing exam. Completion of at least one semester is preferable or a CNA.
Experience:
Previous hospital employment preferred but not required.
Certification/Licensure:
Must possess current KDHE certification as a nurse assistant to work on the SNF.
Code Blue Training:
A minimum training level of BLS is required.
Physical Demands:
Job can demand constant walking. Sitting may be required occasionally, as well as frequent standing. Occasionally the job requires lifting and carrying up to 35 lbs. May also require pushing and pulling up to 35 lbs. Job requires full range of body motion, with occasional twisting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, and reaching. Job may require reaching overhead. Job requires ability to handle and lift patients. Eye-hand coordination, and finger and manual dexterity are required.
Requires corrected hearing and vision to a normal range. Job requires working under stressful conditions and/or irregular hours. Some exposure to communicable diseases, sharps, and hazardous material is anticipated. Job requires potential exposure to body fluids and radiation. Requires the ability to distinguish letters and symbols. Use of office equipment such as telephones, copying machines, computers, fax machines, pagers, and intercoms may be required. Position Overview:
