Provide basic wound care, including cleaning and dressing, with consideration for limited resources and potential environmental challenges in a shelter, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse. Monitor patients' vital signs and overall condition, and report any changes or abnormalities to the appropriate medical personnel, including the ability to quickly identify and triage patients with urgent medical needs. Perform basic life support (BLS) and other emergency medical interventions as needed, within the constraints of a shelter setting. Assist in the operation of medical equipment, such as oxygen delivery systems, IV pumps, and cardiac monitors, safely and effectively, and ensure equipment is functional and available in the shelter. Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, documenting assessments, interventions, and outcomes, using appropriate documentation methods for a shelter environment. Educate patients and their families on health conditions, treatment plans, and self-care practices, with consideration for the diverse backgrounds and literacy levels of shelter residents. Collaborate with physicians, paramedics, and other healthcare professionals as well as shelter staff and volunteers to coordinate patient care and ensure optimal outcomes. Adhere to all infection control and safety protocols to prevent the spread of disease and maintain a safe environment within the shelter setting. Provide compassionate and culturally sensitive care to patients and their families in a stressful and challenging environment, recognizing the emotional and psychological impact of displacement and trauma on shelter residents.
