Summary

Duties and Responsibilities of a Certified Pharmacy Tech:
Assists the pharmacist in filling, preparing, and dispensing prescriptions; counts, packages, and labels unit doses for inspection; fills routine orders for prepackaged non-prescription pharmaceuticals and medical supplies.
Assists patients who are dropping off or picking up prescription orders; verifies that patients receive correct prescriptions at point of sale.
Enters patient prescription orders into a computerized database; creates and maintains computerized patient health and insurance information, in accordance with established protocol and procedure.
Formats and uploads patient insurance data for billing purposes and monitors reimbursements.
Communicates with prescribing practitioners as necessary to obtain refill authorizations for patients; communicates as necessary with third party payers to obtain payment for prescription claims.
Assists with inventory control, to include ordering replacement drugs, removing outdated stock, checking new orders, and returning unwanted stock; performs periodic inventories of pharmaceutical and related stock.
Receives and processes pharmaceutical deliveries from vendors as appropriate, and places on shelves in accordance with established protocol and procedure.
Processes vendor invoices; monitors status of standing purchase orders and enters electronic requests for new orders or revisions to existing orders, as appropriate.
Reconciles and records all daily cash and non-cash transactions; deposits and records all insurance payments.
Creates and maintains spreadsheets to facilitate the financial monitoring and control of pharmacy operations.
Fills and packages medications, including blister/bubble packaging and mail order.
Assists in training new staff on routine procedures.
Follows all current policies and procedures of UNMMG, Pharmacy, and State and Federal laws.
Keeps pharmacy clean and free of clutter.
Keeps work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements:
High school diploma (preferred) or GED certificate
Successful completion of a pharmacy technician training program
Active Pharmacy TechnicianCertification Board (PTCB) certification preferred
Previous experience compounding sterile pharmaceuticals preferred
Sterile certification a plus
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and multitask effectively
Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills
Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment
Outgoing and friendly
Must pass 5 panel drug screening

Responsibilities
Fills prescription items, as permitted by the State Board of Pharmacy, packaging medications for dispensing and for delivery, meeting the accuracy and productivity standards of the pharmacy
Labels products appropriately, including cautionary or auxiliary labels
Participates in the periodic inventory of the pharmacy
May check in drugs and supplies, stock shelves and remove out-of-date items from the inventory
Prepares medications including emulsions, liquids, powders and ointments, which may include non-sterile compounding
Communicates with internal and external customers in a pleasant and professional manner
May process returned medications from the facility for credit or destruction
Assists in the training of new employees
Also performs at least one of the following:
Works in the Controlled Drugs (Narcotics) Room;
Works with automated machine to prepack drugs;
Manages inventory functions such as monitoring pharmaceutical levels and identify expired medications, managing to the pharmacy standard for Days on Hand;
Inputs patient data and medication orders into a computer system to produce labels (data entry);
Mixes/packages IV medications, sanitizes IV room, equipment and hood
Services facility-based medication dispensing machines (e.g., RxNow)
Performs other tasks as assigned
Qualifications
Required: High School diploma or equivalent. Experience in a pharmacy setting and with medical terminology. Ability to operate a computer; ability to recognize and identify medications. Detail oriented; goal oriented, team player, effective oral communication. Pharmacy Technician license.
Desired: Long Term Care pharmacy experience.
