Job Summary: Performs a variety of duties to assist the staff pharmacist which do not require the professional judgement of a Registered Pharmacist. Duties may include ordering, technician scheduling, inventory control, compounding, packaging, labeling and distribution of medication and other pharmacy supplies needed for use in the hospital, as well as assisting with, and maintaining written records, as required. Works under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist in the clinical/dispensing role. Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities: Assists in Pharmacy Operations under supervision of a licensed pharmacist. • Coordinates pharmacy technician workflow within the department on a day to day basis. • Maintains work flow in a timely and orderly manner to preclude delays. In collaboration with the Director of Pharmacy, manages the pharmacy technician schedule - including schedule creation, updates, vacation coverage, appropriate staffing levels and management of call-outs. In collaboration with Pharmacy Leadership, assesses and recommends improvements to pharmacy operations on a regular basis. Monitors and maintains stock levels of pharmaceuticals and supplies. • Assures that pharmaceuticals are stored in accordance with manufacturer's recommendation. • Fills drug requisitions for patient care locations. • Prepares drug kits or trays with appropriate controls. • Restocks Pyxis automated dispensing machines. • Delivers medications and IV products to patient care locations. • Delivers or restocks Controlled Substances with the appropriate controls. • Processes pharmaceuticals returned from patient care locations. • Identifies and segregates short dated and outdated pharmaceuticals. • Unpacks, checks, and places into inventory purchases pharmaceuticals. Prepares designated drugs and materials. • Repackages pharmaceuticals with appropriate controls. • Manufactures extemporaneous products in accordance with pharmaceutical compounding regulations. • Compounds parenteral products including TPN and/or dialysis in a timely manner with consideration for aseptic technique and waste prevention. • Prepares antineoplastics as appropriate. • Maintains cleanliness of the IV compounding area in regulation with USP 797/800 guidelines and with consideration for Universal Precautions. • In collaboration with the Designated Person for 797 compliance, maintains documentation of cleanroom monitoring and cleaning activities. • Maintains stock levels of supplies in the IV compounding area. • Monitors and maintains stock levels of premixed products. • Prepares first dose medication request labels in a timely manner. • Prepares "cart fill" meds for distribution • Produces computer printed accessory labels as needed. • Assures that bulk manufactured products are stored in accordance with standards. • Communicates resupply needs to the supervising pharmacist/pharmacy buyer as appropriate. • Communicates to RPh potential duplications, interactions or therapy concerns. Performs related duties. • Inspects patient care locations for product integrity and proper storage. • Performs selected clerical duties. • Identifies and communicates cost containment opportunities. • Maintains assigned area in a neat and clean manner. • Controls drug preparation/compounding to minimize waste and errors. • Maintains batch records, control systems and labels as required. • Conducts other duties/tasks as assigned. Qualifications Education/Self Development • Maintains current hospital educational requirements. • Maintains working knowledge of pharmaceutical/medical terms, abbreviations, and common symbols. • Provides training, development, and education for new staff, students, and visitors. • Post certification, maintains the necessary level of continuing education. • Participates in hospital and/or community educational programs. Organizes documentation to coincide with regulatory and institutional requirements. • Organizes Controlled Substance and Pyxis documents and reports, assuring regulatory compliance. • Assures that the Proof of Use and Pyxis documentation is complete in all regards, gaining resolution as appropriate. • Assures that the manual processing of transactions are undertaken appropriately. • Gains or generates reports required by staff in the care of patients or QA activities. Participates in “Special Projects” for the department with minimum supervision. • Participates in development of specific inter and intra department projects to benefit patient care. • Functions as preceptor to Technician staff. • Participates in QA activities, presenting data and conclusions for monthly inclusion in reports. Educational / Minimum Requirements: High School diploma. Associate's Degree preferred. Prior experience as a technician (2 years). State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements: Certified Pharmacy Technician. Annual Registration with the Department of Consumer Protection. Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements: General orientation at time of hire. Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. Other programs as mandated by Hospital. Special Requirements: Six months learning time. Computer skills as it relates to Pharmacy operations. Physical Requirements: Considerable physical activity - i.e. a combination of walking, sitting, bending, lifting, and standing, throughout the work period. Typically on feet much of the day. Manual dexterity requisite. Work Environment: Central Pharmacy and Patient Care locations. Exposure to patient elements and hazardous chemicals/pharmaceuticals. Cognitive Requirements: Literate in English, verbal and written communication skills, ability to perform pharmacy mathematical calculations. Computer and keypunch knowledge. Critical thinking skills, pharmacy purchasing and inventory control skills.
