Under the direction of a staff pharmacist and/or pharmacy leadership team, follow established policies and procedures to perform a variety of highly advanced technical and clerical support tasks that are vital to the operation of the pharmacy department. Tasks include, but are not limited to, preparation and distribution of unit dose medications, compounded sterile and non-sterile products, outpatient prescriptions, stock orders, and the operation and maintenance of pharmacy and area-specific technologies. Tasks may also include responsibilities of technical training and participation in departmental projects. This requires successful experience and performance as a pharmacy technician III.
These tasks are designed to assist the pharmacist in the preparation and delivery of pharmaceutical supplies and medications in accordance with the laws and regulations of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy, Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and other regulatory agencies as applicable. Most tasks require the review and authorization of a licensed pharmacist.
Staffing assignments will include roles throughout central pharmacy and designated specialized pharmacy areas.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
1. Leadership
a. Train new or existing staff members.
b. Provide direction and guidance to pharmacy staff in following policy and procedure while promoting professional behaviors and attitudes.
c. Provide feedback to pharmacy leadership about efficiency of workflow process and general staff performance.
d. Lead departmental quality improvement or group research projects as assigned.
e. Oversee drug distribution activities and process, including leading, troubleshooting, maintaining, and triaging activities and issues as appropriate.
2. Staffing and Competency
a. Perform medication deliveries and distribute medications to patient care areas employing barcode scanning.
b. Perform all required pharmaceutical dosage calculations necessary to prepare extemporaneous dosage forms as applicable under the direct supervision of a pharmacist.
c. Return unused medications employing barcode scanning and perform medication expiration date checking as assigned.
d. Fill medication requisitions and type labels for ambulatory and discharge prescriptions for all applicable patient care areas.
e. Manage inventory in all pharmacy areas and automated dispensing cabinets (ADC) and charge stock orders, ADC shrinkage, and patient and clinic requisitions.
f. Provide information and triage phone calls to the appropriate individual within the pharmacy department when answering the phone.
g. Carry out duties and responsibilities as assigned by staff pharmacists or pharmacy leadership.
h. Maintain clean and organized work areas.
i. May prepare compounded sterile products using principles of aseptic technique, distribute and transport controlled substances under the appropriate state of control, or maintain code cart inventory per policies and procedures as applicable.
3. Technology
a. Utilize area-specific technology, including, but not limited to, robotics, automation, software, equipment, and information systems.
b. Practice preventative maintenance of area-specific technology, including, but not limited to, robotics, automation, software, equipment, and information systems.
c. Troubleshoot aforementioned technology failures to minimize operational downtime and maximize uptime.
d. Assist in the implementation of new area-specific technology as mentioned above.
e. Follow processes for obtaining manufacturer service if needed for repairs.
4. Quality and Safety
a. Follow institutional and departmental policies and procedures.
b. Demonstrate accountability and ownership of job responsibilities.
c. Exhibit and promote professional behaviors and attitudes related to communication, punctuality, workplace attire, personal internet or phone use, and teamwork.
d. Carry out departmental and institutional patient safety initiatives.
e. Report safety issues identified during job responsibilities.
f. Assist pharmacy department to maintain statistics, data metrics, and workload productivity as applicable.
g. Compile, analyze, and report department-specific productivity or workload data for pharmacy leadership.

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Previous hospital-related experience, formal training, or certification from a pharmacy technician training program desired.
3. Must be a registered Pharmacy Technician with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy
4. Must be a Board Certified Pharmacy Technician from a nationally approved techniciancertification board
5. Upon departmental orientation and annually thereafter, must complete training, which includes, but is not limited to:
a. Institutional Safety Training
b. Annual Departmental Technician Competency Assessments

Medication Reconciliation Pharmacy Technician Duties:
- Conduct in-person or phone meetings with patients to update medication lists prior to their provider appointments, ensuring accuracy and completeness of the medication list.

Job Summary:
The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for helping the Pharmacists perform daily tasks to serve customers. Their duties include filling and labeling prescriptions, interacting with customers to answer questions or give them their prescriptions and contacting customers to notify them when their prescription is ready.
Job Responsibilities:
Supports pharmacy services by stocking, preparing, and distributing medications
Helps health care providers and patients by greeting them professionally, answering questions and requests, and referring inquiries to the pharmacist
Maintains pharmacy inventory, anticipating needed medications and supplies, placing and expediting orders, verifying receipt, and removing outdated drugs. Ensures separation of 340B drug inventories as applicable
Maintains a safe and clean pharmacy by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations
Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols
Prepares medications for pharmacist to dispense by interpreting medication orders and prescriptions, preparing labels, and calculating quantities
Required Skills:
Previous experience in a pharmacy, retail, medical, or customer service setting
Previous experience as a Pharmacy Technician (1-3 years)
Experience managing multiple competing priorities; excellent prioritization skills
Strong analytical and organizational skills including ability to analyze data to identify trends and communicate them through effective reporting methods
Strong attention to detail
Excellent oral, written, and verbal communication skills including experience presenting complex information to senior leaders
Skilled in exercising initiative, judgement, discretion, and decision making to achieve objectives

Physical Nature of the Job:
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move throughout the pharmacy and health center

Varied Shifts (United States of America) Under the direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist, Supervisor, and/or Director of Pharmacy Services, performs a wide variety of Pharmacy duties to meet the needs for patients in the hospital. Pharmacy Technician duties include filling routine drug orders for unit dose medications, refilling medications in Pharmacy Automated Dispensing Cabinets, performing Non-Sterile and Sterile Compounding . Other duties include repackaging of medication into unit dose barcoded packages, replenishes code carts drug supply and performs inventory duties for the Central Pharmacy operation.
Compensation Pay Range:
$23.23 - $31.26
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1 - Performs all duties and responsibilities for to Central Pharmacy Medication Dispensing which includes Carousel functionality, inventory adjustments, expiration date tracking and demand picks of floor stock medication. Performs monthly outdate checks of Pharmacy Inventory as assigned by the Supervisor or Manager.
2 - Performs all duties and responsibilities for Automative Dispensing Machine (ADM) to include Omnicell functionality with Batch filling and patient specific bin restocks. Demonstrate proficiency in other tasks such as Outdating, Transfers, and Modifying pockets.
3 - Perform all duties and responsibilities for Extemporaneous Non-Sterile Compounding and Oral Syringe preparation. Able to demonstrate appropriate labeling, expiration dating, and logging of compounds in the electronic or paper logs when appropriate.
4 - Perform all duties and responsibilities for medication repackaging to include operation of the automated Unit Dose packer (Eucilid) and manual packaging of Chemotherapy/Hazardous medication. Must be proficient with other repackaging tasks such as making kits and barcode labeling.
5 - Performs all duties and responsibilities for Code Cart exchange, Code Cart Trays, and Transport Boxes.
6 - Performs all duties and responsibilities for Non-Sterile Hazardous Drug compounding. Passes yearly competency showing proficiency in hazardous room procedures which include gowning, compounding and cleaning of the Biological Safety cabinet. Must be proficient enough to train and educate new technicians and students in this area. Must show proficiency in monthly cleaning breakdown of the biological safety cabinet.
7 - Performs all duties and responsibilities for Sterile Products production if trained in that area. Performs required cleanings and restocking when required. Passes yearly competency showing proficiency in clean room procedures and sterile product preparation. Fully understands concepts of gowning, hand washing and cleaning of all areas. Able to demonstrate timely recording of tasks required in electronic signature logs which include cleaning logs, temperature logs and humidity logs in the IV room.
8 - Performs all duties and responsibilities dealing with customer service, quality assurance, inventory management, maintaining a orderly, clean and safe environment.
9 - Performs anything else deemed necessary by their supervisor or Pharmacist on duty (other duties required).

High school level of education.
Minimum Work Experience
Minimum of 3 months work experience as Pharmacy Technician preferred. Hospital pharmacy experience desirable.
