Registered Respiratory Therapists provide evidence-based clinical care to some of the most critically ill patients in the United States. Caring for adult, pediatric and/or neonatal patient populations, Registered Respiratory Therapists evaluate, treat and care for patients with a wide range of lung diseases and respiratory disorders, such as asthma, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, emphysema, COPD and lung cancer. Registered Respiratory Therapists also perform other duties such as IV insertion, ECGs, peripheral phlebotomy and more. This role provides an invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on experience and work with a multidisciplinary team collaborating with Registered Nurses and other caregivers to deliver efficient, high-quality patient care.
**A caregiver in this position works three 12-hour night shifts from 7:00 p.m. - 7:30 a.m. with every other weekend and holiday rotation** **requirements.**
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
+ Provide assessment, treatment, care and evaluation to patients with respiratory insufficiencies.
+ Direct respiratory caregivers for delivery of care.

The Heart Center at Nationwide Children's Hospital (NCH) seeks two Cardiac Intensivists, at any academic rank, to join its growing and dynamic program.
Candidates must have completed fellowship training in pediatric cardiology and/or critical care that included advanced cardiac intensive care training. Preference will be given to those who are boarded in pediatric cardiology and interested in an academic center with research and leadership opportunities for the candidate's professional growth.
The successful applicant will join a group of ten multi-background academic cardiac intensivists and twelve dedicated nurse practitioners devoted to the CTICU, providing 24/7 in house coverage. Our free-standing CTICU is a 20-bed unit with 600+ admissions per year (medical and surgical). The Heart Center's comprehensive services include hybrid palliation, comprehensive single ventricle program, thoracic organ transplantation, blood conservation strategies, and cardiac mechanical support. Current annual clinical metrics include: over 450 cardiothoracic surgeries, over 600 cardiac catheterizations and EP procedures, and over 24,000 cardiology outpatient visits. We have a pediatric and pediatric/adult combined cardiology fellowship programs.

The Respiratory Care Practitioner I is responsible for providing respiratory care through patient assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation. * Determines appropriateness of prescribed therapy and recommends methods to physician to achieve therapeutic goals including IPPB, Aerosol therapy, Postural drainage and percussion, ultrasonic nebulizer, incentive spirometry, metered dose inhalers and spacers, etc.
* Sets up and maintains different modes of oxygen therapy, to maintain adequate PaO2's with accurate inspired levels of oxygen.
* Administers intermittent positive pressure breathing (IPPB) or Aerosol Therapy by first preparing the prescribed medication ordered by the physician and adjusting the machine or device to accomplish patient's individual clinical needs; document and observe patient's vital signs, productivity of cough, relief of Dyspnea, improved breath sounds and any adverse reactions to therapy; and use judgement and technical skill to determine possible adverse reactions and suggestions for appropriateness of therapy.
* Gives postural drainage, vibration, percussion to ensure proper drainage of bronchial secretions by use of manual or mechanical percussion; check orders and X-rays for segments to be treated prior to initiating treatment; auscultation prior to and after procedure to note presence of clearance of secretions and response to therapy.
* Instructs patients and families in incentive spirometer, metered dose inhaler (MDI) administration, postural drainage and clapping, oxygen therapy, ventilator care and home aerosol therapy.
* May assist doctor with bronchoscopy and tracheostomy; assists with tracheostomy endotracheal tube changes; ensures proper humidification.
* Procurement of sputum for culture and sensitivity or airway clearance either by patient coaching, administration of mucolytics, aerosol therapy or endotracheal / nasopharyngeal suctioning.
* Evaluates normal and pathologic blood and urine laboratory value ranges.
* Performs arterial punctures and analysis; has an in-depth knowledge of analysis and arterial blood gas (ABG) interpretation. Performs arterial line procedures, takes safety precautions, sterile procedure, flushing, and ABG aspirations.
* May perform EKG's; understands electronic monitoring, lead placement, and basic arrhythmias.
* Maintains all Respiratory Therapy equipment and supplies.

Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position
The Respiratory Care Practitioner is responsible for providing respiratory care through patient assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation. Performs all respiratory care procedures within scope of license. Monitors the patient's response to therapies and makes recommendations to change or modify based on the assessment.
Essential Job Functions
* In collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team, conducts initial and ongoing patient assessment, analyzes assessment data, creates a plan of care, implements treatment, and evaluates treatment effectiveness.
* Performs treatments and therapies according to physician orders. Explains therapy and therapeutic goals to patient; modifies treatment procedures based on patient response. Sets up and maintains different modes of therapy. Determines appropriateness of prescribed therapy and recommends methods to physician to achieve therapeutic goals.
* Maintains proper documentation, patient medical charting and recordkeeping. Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
* Provides patient education on cardiopulmonary diseases/disorders and associated treatment options. Instructs patient and patient's caregiver(s) in incentive spirometer, metered dose inhaler (MDI) administration, oxygen therapy, home aerosol therapy, or ventilator care, if applicable.
* Sets up and maintains respiratory therapy equipment and supplies.
* May serve as a preceptor to new team members and/or students.
* Responds to cardio-pulmonary resuscitations and actively participates as indicated by clinical circumstances.

Licensing/Certification

* 6 months Respiratory Therapy experience in a general care area (preferred)
Training

Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age, specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.
