Champps company history timeline

1984

For the first time since 1984, Fuddruckers was advertised on television.

1985

In January 1985 Fuddruckers' founder, Phil Romano, retired, paving the way for Baumhauer's promotion to president.

1987

By 1987 Fuddruckers was once again profitable, its number of restaurants pared to 80.

1988

Origins and 1988 Fuddruckers Merger

1990

In the aftermath of Vince's 1990 exit, Baumhauer fine-tuned Daka International's operations.

1993

Baumhauer also raised capital by selling stock to investors on two occasions, leading up to his 1993 proclamation that he would double the size of Daka International during the ensuing three years.

The 1993--96 period saw Daka International expand mightily, and not just in the number of Fuddruckers restaurants.

1995

Amid concerns that Daka International's portfolio of businesses was too diverse, the company's stock price slumped, dropping from a high of $34 per share in 1995 to $10 per share after the depressed financial figures were released.

1996

A short time later, in April 1996, Baumhauer acquired another chain, the 18-unit Great Bagel and Coffee Co., described as a combination specialty coffee retailer, bagel bakery, and grab-and-go deli.

In July 1996 discount store chain Kmart Corp. and Daka International announced a joint venture of mammoth proportions.

In early 1996 a $69 million stock swap added another restaurant chain, the 15-unit Champps Americana chain, featuring multitiered dining rooms, open kitchens, video screens, and disc jockeys.

Thanks to the spin-off and the divestiture of the contract feeding operations, the new company began its corporate life virtually debt-free and better able to focus on solving some of the problems that had surfaced in 1996 and led to crippling losses.

1997

He first defeated Maurice Smith at UFC Japan on December 21, 1997 to become the UFC heavyweight champion.

Baumhauer, with Unique Casual's nearly debt-free balance sheet to work from, was able to expand the chain for the first time and build upon the 12-restaurant base in existence in mid-1997.

1998

Another portion of the company's financial might was removed in late 1998 when the Great Bagel and Coffee Co. chain was closed, leaving Unique Casual as a single-concept restaurant company dependent on its roughly 30 Champps Americana chain.

Before the end of 1998 the company sold its 204-unit Fuddruckers chain, stripping itself of more than 60 percent of its revenue.

1999

Founded in 1999 by Shawn and Julie Burcham, Champs Chicken has grown rapidly from humble beginnings.

2003

On September 26, 2003, Couture defeated Tito Ortiz at UFC 44 to become the UFC light heavyweight champion.

2004

On January 31, 2004, UFC Hall of Famer BJ Penn defeated Matt Hughes at UFC 47 to claim the UFC welterweight title.

2006

Widely regarded as one of the greatest of all time, UFC Hall of Famer Georges St-Pierre first became the UFC welterweight champion on November 11, 2006 after defeating Matt Hughes by second-round knockout at UFC 65.

2008

Penn then moved down to lightweight, where he faced Joe Stevenson at UFC 80 on January 19, 2008 for the UFC lightweight title, which he went on to defend three times.

2009

In between, he attempted to become the first simultaneous two-division champ in UFC history when he challenged welterweight king Georges St-Pierre at UFC 94 in 2009.

2011

Was that your first, was that 2011 when you took over? You didn't have an anniversary in your first year? Of course.

2015

With a knockout that will live on in highlight reels forever, Conor McGregor began his reign in the UFC featherweight division after defeating Jose Aldo in just 13 seconds at UFC 194 on December 12, 2015.

2016

Less than a year later, “The Notorious” lived up to his nickname on November 12, 2016 when he defeated Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 to also earn the UFC lightweight title, becoming the first fighter to hold UFC titles in multiple divisions simultaneously, coining the term “champ champ.”

2018

Cormier defended this title three times over the course of nearly three years, before vacating the title in December of 2018.

On December 29, 2018, Nunes defeated Cris Cyborg by first-round knockout at UFC 232 to also become the UFC women’s featherweight champion, becoming the third-ever “champ champ,” and first woman to do so.

2019

He earned a third-round TKO over the favored Moraes on June 8, 2019 to become the fourth-ever “champ champ,” and the first person to be an Olympic gold medalist and simultaneous two-division UFC champion.

2020

He defended the belt once with a 32-second TKO over TJ Dillashaw, before vacating his title on February 29, 2020.

A special customer spotlight episode of the Boelter Wire, this episode was recorded in early March 2020 before restrictions due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
