1819

In 1819, Daniel Drake established the Medical College of Ohio, hoping to improve medical care on the frontier.

1820

By 1890, Hamilton County had become an important industrial, political, literary, and educational center in both Ohio and the United States. It continued to grow, reaching nearly ten thousand people by 1820.

1838

Charle's father, Aphonso, emigrated from Vermont in 1838 and was the founding member of the Cincinnati Literacy Society.

1887

Cincinnati's industries employed 103,325 people in 1887, and produced more than 200 million dollars in goods.

1890

By 1890, Hamilton County had become an important industrial, political, literary, and educational center in both Ohio and the United States.

1922

In 1922, he became the first African American to serve as an editor of the Harvard Law Review.

1924

After studying at the University of Madrid in 1924, Houston was admitted to the District of Columbia bar that same year and joined forces with his father in practicing law.

1929

Attorney Charles Phelps Taft, half-brother of President William Howard Taft began construction on the Times-Star building in 1929.

1933

Houston used his post at Howard to recruit talented students into the NAACP’s legal efforts (among them Marshall and Oliver Hill, the first- and second-ranked students in the class of 1933, both of whom were drafted into organization’s legal battles by Houston).

1958

After Nephew Hulbert Taft retired from the Times-Star in 1958, the Post (Scripps-Howard) bought the Times-Star.

He served as an editor-in-chief until he died in 1929 during construction of the building. It was later reported by Time Magazine that Hulbert was the only Taft family member opposing the 1958 sale of the paper to Scripps-Howard, and at the decisive meeting the eighty-year old man wept.

1979

After partnering its printing operation with the Cincinnati Enquirer in 1979.

1980

In the early 1980’s, the County of Hamilton purchased the building.

1991

In 1991, renovations began to house courtrooms and offices of the Hamilton County Court of Domestic Relations.

1999

Illustrating the area's strong economy, the county's per capita income in 1999 was almost thirty-four thousand dollars, one of the highest averages in Ohio.

2005

Houston is the namesake of the Charles Houston Bar Association and the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice at Harvard Law School, which opened in the fall of 2005.
