1966

In the five decades since the school was incorporated in 1966, CDU has graduated more than 600 physicians, over 1,270 physician assistants and over 1,700 other health professionals, as well as training over 2,700 physician specialists through its sponsored residency programs.

1968

OCTOBER 1968 Mitchell Spellman, MD, PhD, begins his tenure as the founding Executive Dean of the Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School.

1969

NOVEMBER 1969 First department chairman is appointed.

1970

JANUARY 1970 Formal opening of the offices of the Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School and the Watts-Willowbrook Regional Medical Program (RMP) at 120th St and Compton Avenue.

1971

JULY 1971 First contract between Los Angeles County and the Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School is agreed to for provision of health care and education services at King Hospital.

The hospital opened in 1971; a year later it became the Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center when it became the teaching hospital of the adjacent Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science.

1972

JUNE 1972 Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School hosts its first Open House.

1973

JUNE 1973 The MEDEX Physician Assistant Program of the Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School, the first such training program in California, graduates its first class of 21 students.

In 1973, Governor Ronald Reagan signed Senate Bill 1026 authored by State Senator Mervyn Dymally to allocate funding and support for the institution from the General Fund to the University of California.

1974

JUNE 1974 Dedication of the Doctor Julius W. Hill Intern and Resident Physician Building, named after the founder of the Golden State Medical Association and former member of the Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School Board of Directors.

JUNE 1974 The Johnnie Tillmon Child Care Center opens as a family day care center.

1977

DECEMBER 1977 Doctor Mitchell Spellman ends his tenure as founding Dean; leaves to become Dean, Medical Services, at Harvard University Medical School.

1978

In May 1978, a proposed agreement between the Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School and the UCLA School of Medicine to jointly establish an undergraduate medical program at Drew was approved.

1979

AUGUST 1979 M. Alfred Haynes, MD, MPH, is formally inaugurated as the Dean of Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School in traditional cap and gown faculty exercises.

1980

MAY 1980 The Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School Foundation is incorporated.

1981

MAY 1981 The $20-million Augustus F. Hawkins Mental Health Building, named after political leader of Watts who became California's first African-American elected to the United States Congress, is dedicated.

He was featured in the United States Postal Service's Great Americans stamp series in 1981, and his name appears on educational institutions across the country.

1982

OCTOBER 1982 Groundbreaking ceremonies are held for the first permanent building on the school's projected 49 acres: the Medical Education Center.

1984

FEBRARY 1984 The Clinical Sciences Research Facility is established in the Augustus F. Hawkins Building.

NOVEMBER 1984 The first permanent building on the Charles R. Drew Postgraduate Medical School campus, the W. Montague Cobb Medical Education Building, is dedicated.

1985

JUNE 1985 King/Drew Medical Magnet High School graduates its first class of 37 students.

1987

APRIL 1987 Under the leadership of Walter F. Leavell, MD, President, the school's name is changed to Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science to reflect its expanded academic role and identity, and the accreditation process is initiated.

OCTOBER 1987 W. Benton Boone, MD, MS, is elected Chairman of the Board of Directors.

1988

He assumes office in January 1988.

2003

OCTOBER 2003 Carole Jordan-Harris, MD, MS, is the first woman elected chair of the Board of Trustees.

2005

JULY 2005 Thomas T. Yoshikawa, MD, is appointed Provost, Chief Operating Officer and Acting President.

2007

In the twenty-first century, King/Drew became the subject of a number of investigations for substandard conditions and was shut down, except for an urgent care center and an outpatient clinic, in August of 2007.

2010

A nationwide search for the founding dean of the School of Nursing was conducted and in January 2010, Doctor Gloria J. McNeal, PhD, MSN, ACNS-BC, FAAN was appointed the founding Dean.

SEPTEMBER 2010 M. Roy Wilson, MD, MS, is named Acting President, CEO and Chairman, Board of Trustees.

The Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing opened in 2010.

In 2010, the university introduced the Community Faculty Track, a unique model for community-academic partnerships in which community leaders are integrated into the university's research goals and the education of medical professionals.

2011

DECEMBER 2011 James Lott is named Chairman, Board of Trustees.

2012

JUNE 2012 First official graduation ceremony of the Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing with 91 candidates (69 Family Nurse Practitioner and 22 Entry Level Masters students).

DECEMBER 2012 Marvin O’Quinn, MPH, is named Chairman, Board of Trustees.

2014

FEBRARY 2014 Official bust unveiling is held for Mervyn M. Dymally, PhD.

2015

JANUARY 2015 Sheldon D. Fields, PhD, RN, FNP-BC, AACRN, FNAP, FAANP, is appointed Dean of the Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing.

Los Angeles County and the University of California opened a smaller version of the hospital with 131 beds in July 2015, naming it the Martin Luther King Community Hospital.

2016

2016 CDU celebrates its 50th anniversary with a series of on- and off-campus events.

2017

CDU is the second most diverse four-year private nonprofit college in the nation, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education (August 2017). The Chronicle for Higher Education Almanac lists CDU as the top private, four-year, nonprofit university in the country in terms of faculty diversity.

2017 Graduate medical education returns to CDU, as the LA County Board of Supervisors approves funding for residencies in Psychiatry and Family Medicine.

In the summer of 2017, the MMDSON began a Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing completion program for RNs from Diploma and Associate Degree programs and this program has been extended to a concurrent curriculum.

2019

In the 2019 United States Department of Education College Scorecard, CDU ranks as the 7th highest college in California in median annual earnings of former students one year after graduation.

In Spring 2019, MMDSON began the Master of Science in Nursing and Post Master of Science in Nursing in the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). Enrollment currently stands more than 400 students in all the nursing programs.
