Charleston Southern University company history timeline
In 1964, trustees were elected by the South Carolina Baptist Convention.
1964 Doctor John A. Hamrick elected first president of the Baptist College at Charleston
Established in 1964, Charleston Southern University is one of the largest accredited independent universities in South Carolina.
By September 1966, buildings on the campus were ready, and the University’s second year began amid construction, landscaping and the physical development of the campus.
The building opened in 1967.
L. Mendel Rivers Library: Dedicated in 1968, the Library was named for former Congressman Lucius Mendel Rivers.
McNair: Facts of the caseOn January 6, 1970, the Baptist College at Charleston, South Carolina, submitted a request for preliminary approval for the issuance of revenue bonds to the Authority.
Strom Thurmond Center: Named for United States senator Strom Thurmond, a founder of the university, the building was dedicated in 1972.
It was expanded to include concentrations in elementary and secondary education beginning with the 1988 spring term.
In 1990, the school achieved university status and changed its name to Charleston Southern University.
In 1990, the South Carolina Baptist Convention voted to change the university's name from Baptist College at Charleston to Charleston Southern University.
In 1993, the College of Education began offering a Master of Education in Educational Administration.
Brewer Center: Named for Jimmie, Patricia and Brad Brewer of Lancaster, S.C., in 2000, the Brewer Center has become the central meeting place for students on campus.
Whittington Hall: Named for Jeff and Bernice Whittington of Little River, S.C., Whittington Hall was dedicated in 2000 and serves Charleston Southern’s music programs.
Science Building: The Science Building, which opened in 2005, houses chemistry labs, biology labs, research labs, offices, a greenhouse and classrooms.
From 2005 to the present, several significant buildings have been added including the Science building, the Whitfield Center for Christian Leadership, the Athletic Performance Center, the Singleton Baseball Complex and the Health Science building.
2006 L. Mendel Rivers Library renovated and Java City added
In 2012, the College of Adult and Professional Studies began offering a Master of Science in Organizational Management.
Derry Patterson Wingo Nursing Building: The Derry Patterson Wingo Nursing Building was expanded in 2013 to accommodate the growth of the nursing program.
2013 Whitfield Center for Christian Leadership opens
2014 Chick-fil-A Express opens, and Hunter Reception Center expanded and renamed the Jairy C. and Carolyn K. Hunter Center, in recognition of Doctor and Mrs.
Doctor Jairy C. Hunter retired in May 2018, and Doctor Dondi E. Costin became the third president on July 1, 2018.
2018 The first doctoral program is announced for a Doctor in Education – Leadership
2020 First collegiate Aeronautics program in South Carolina announced
