The Hannahville Indian School was first established on the reservation in 1975 for Native Americans in the area.
Marie, opened as a K-6 tribal school in 1994, under the sponsorship of Sault Ste.
In 1994, Tri-High School was established as an alternative high school in a consortium agreement between three public schools.
In 1995, Northern Michigan University determined it would authorize public school academies (PSA). At one time, NMU contracted with six PSAs.
In 1995, the school became NMU’S first charter school and was named the Nah Tah Wahsh Public School Academy.
Francis Reh Public School Academy, located in Saginaw, opened in 1997 as a K-9.
Pennsylvania's charter schools were established by the Charter School Law, enacted through Act 22 of 1997.
In January of 1998, Avon Grove School District proposed the closing of Avon Grove Elementary School and Kemblesville Elementary School, combining them on one campus.
The school was renamed the Joseph K. Lumsden Bahweting Anishnabe PSA in 1998 in honor of the former tribal leader.
The school opened with a new building in 1999 as a K-5 elementary.
Year-to-year charges deducted from our district's State funding by the Ohio Department of Education has been used to fund Charter/Community schools since their inception in 1999.
In 1999, they formed the Concerned Citizens for Avon Grove Schools and the idea of a charter school was planted.
Although they won three of the five seats, Avon Grove School District moved ahead with their construction plan in 2000 and the founding coalition for a charter school, the Avon Grove Schools Action Group (AGSAG), was born.
In January 2001, President George W. Bush signed the the No Child Left Behind Act, further expanding federal role in holding schools accountable for student outcomes.
Our charter was approved in April of 2002 and in June, AGCS leased the old Avon Grove Elementary School on State Road in West Grove.
The answer to our need for space came in 2007 with the 43,000 square foot Kemblesville Elementary School building, which had been abandoned for five years and was in a state of disrepair.
The ELC opened in September 2008 with a new central wing, colorful finishes, creative space planning, and lively elements, such as the “trees of knowledge” throughout.
South Pointe Scholars, opened in Ypsilanti in 2011 as a K-6 school.
Experiencia Preparatory Academy, located in Detroit, opened in 2012 as a K-10 school.
East Shore Leadership Academy, located in Port Huron, opened as a K-5 school in 2014, under the authority of a charter agreement with Northern Michigan University.
Northern Michigan University became authorizer of Francis Reh Academy in 2014.
East Shore added Grade 6 in 2015, with the intention of expanding to a K-8 school.
The preamble of this law provides that charter schools are intended to, "among other things, improve pupil learning, encourage the use of different and innovative teaching methods, and offer parents and students expanded educational choices." As of the most recent federal data, in 2016 there were:
