The Hannahville Indian School was first established on the reservation in 1975 for Native Americans in the area.
Marie, opened as a K-6 tribal school in 1994, under the sponsorship of Sault Ste.
In 1994, Tri-High School was established as an alternative high school in a consortium agreement between three public schools.
In 1995, Northern Michigan University determined it would authorize public school academies (PSA). At one time, NMU contracted with six PSAs.

Our charter was approved in April of 2002 and in June, AGCS leased the old Avon Grove Elementary School on State Road in West Grove.
The answer to our need for space came in 2007 with the 43,000 square foot Kemblesville Elementary School building, which had been abandoned for five years and was in a state of disrepair.
The ELC opened in September 2008 with a new central wing, colorful finishes, creative space planning, and lively elements, such as the “trees of knowledge” throughout.
South Pointe Scholars, opened in Ypsilanti in 2011 as a K-6 school.
Experiencia Preparatory Academy, located in Detroit, opened in 2012 as a K-10 school.
East Shore Leadership Academy, located in Port Huron, opened as a K-5 school in 2014, under the authority of a charter agreement with Northern Michigan University.
Northern Michigan University became authorizer of Francis Reh Academy in 2014.
East Shore added Grade 6 in 2015, with the intention of expanding to a K-8 school.
The preamble of this law provides that charter schools are intended to, "among other things, improve pupil learning, encourage the use of different and innovative teaching methods, and offer parents and students expanded educational choices." As of the most recent federal data, in 2016 there were:
