Chase company history timeline

1949

Connections with mainland China are reinvigorated the same year when Chase Manhattan becomes the first American correspondent of the Bank of China since the 1949 revolution.

1955

On March 31, 1955, Chase National Bank (then the nation’s 3rd largest bank) and the Bank of the Manhattan Company (the 15th largest) merged to form The Chase Manhattan Bank.

1958

The Marine Corporation in Wisconsin, a Bank One predecessor, is the first bank holding company in the United States, founded in 1958.

1959

In 1959, Chase Manhattan Bank installed an IBM 650 computer, which enabled the staff to process transactions at lightning speed.

1969

Its reorganization as the Chase Manhattan Corporation in 1969 reflected a general movement in American banking to establish holding companies to own banking operations that were separate from other operations such as finance companies, which were by law excluded from the purview of banking.

The bank was renamed Morgan Guaranty Trust Co. in 1969.

1970

In 1970 Bank One forerunner City National Bank installs ATMs in its branches, making Columbus, Ohio, a major test market for the machines.

1971

Technological improvements to the ATM and added functionality, such as making deposits and transfers, are rolled out beginning in 1971.

In 1971, the same department unveiled its head turning 'Any Car' campaign, showcasing a vehicle created from the parts of 22 different cars.

1974

In 1974, David Rockefeller, chairman of Chase Manhattan Bank, establishes the Chase Manhattan Bank Archives in an effort to preserve the legacy of his firm.

1989

In 1989 Morgan became a leading United States underwriter of corporate debt, and by the end of the 20th century it had become one of the world’s most-respected investment banking houses.

1996

In 1996 The Chase Manhattan Corporation merged with the nation’s second largest bank, the New York-based Chemical Banking Corporation, to form what was then the largest bank in the United States.

1998

First Chicago NBD introduces a free Internet bank in 1998.

2000

The Chase Manhattan Corporation, former American holding company that merged with J.P. Morgan & Co. in 2000 to form J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.

2004

Bank One of Chicago merged with JPMorgan Chase in 2004.

Although the original design featured multiple colors and patterns, in 2004 the solid blue octagon was adopted.

2008

In 2008 JPMorgan Chase suffered billions of dollars in losses during the subprime mortgage crisis, a severe contraction of liquidity in credit markets worldwide brought about by the steep devaluation of mortgage-backed securities.

2010

In 2010, the firm acquired the successful British investment bank, Cazenove.

2012

In May 2012 JPMorgan Chase announced that an investment unit of the bank had lost some $2 billion through a complex series of trades in derivatives, including credit-default swaps (CDSs).
