Chatham County Schools company history timeline

1868

Reconstruction and the new State Constitution of 1868 established a five-member board of county commissioners, divided the county into townships, and radically changed the court system.

1956

The name was changed to J. S. Waters High School in 1956 at the request of parents and school patrons, in honor of J. Shirley Waters, then superintendent of Chatham County Schools.

1958

Prior to 1958, Goldston supported two area union schools: J. S. Waters High School and Goldston High School.

1968

The current J. S. Waters School began operation in 1968 and serves students in the central section of Chatham County in Goldston, North Carolina.

1971

1977

In 1977, the county adopted the council-manager form of government and appointed the first county manager.
