Someone in a chef/owner role will also be responsible for coordinating a kitchen and other chefs to ensure the food is prepared according to standards and dishes in a visually appealing manner. They also supervise hygiene and keep the kitchen up to health codes. Depending on the establishment's size, a chef/owner may also have to supervise ingredient purchase and quality.

To become a professional chef, you need to attend a culinary school and have relevant experience. It also requires a strong work ethic and perseverance, especially in restaurants that get lots of hungry customers.

There is more than meets the eye when it comes to being a chef/owner. For example, did you know that they make an average of $21.21 an hour? That's $44,126 a year!

Between 2018 and 2028, the career is expected to grow 11% and produce 15,400 job opportunities across the U.S.

There are certain skills that many chef/owners have in order to accomplish their responsibilities. We discovered that a lot of resumes listed business skills, communication skills and creativity.

When it comes to the most important skills required to be a chef/owner, we found that a lot of resumes listed 22.8% of chef/owners included menu planning, while 15.5% of resumes included kitchen equipment, and 6.2% of resumes included menu items. Hard skills like these are helpful to have when it comes to performing essential job responsibilities.

When it comes to searching for a job, many search for a key term or phrase. Instead, it might be more helpful to search by industry, as you might be missing jobs that you never thought about in industries that you didn't even think offered positions related to the chef/owner job title. But what industry to start with? Most chef/owners actually find jobs in the retail and hospitality industries.

How To Become a Chef/Owner

If you're interested in becoming a chef/owner, one of the first things to consider is how much education you need. We've determined that 28.2% of chef/owners have a bachelor's degree. In terms of higher education levels, we found that 2.7% of chef/owners have master's degrees. Even though some chef/owners have a college degree, it's possible to become one with only a high school degree or GED.

Choosing the right major is always an important step when researching how to become a chef/owner. When we researched the most common majors for a chef/owner, we found that they most commonly earn associate degree degrees or bachelor's degree degrees. Other degrees that we often see on chef/owner resumes include high school diploma degrees or diploma degrees.

You may find that experience in other jobs will help you become a chef/owner. In fact, many chef/owner jobs require experience in a role such as executive chef. Meanwhile, many chef/owners also have previous career experience in roles such as sous chef or chef.
