Advanced Manufacturing R&D Technician
Dandy 3.4
Chemist job in Provo, UT
Dandy is transforming the massive and antiquated dental industry-an industry worth over $200B. Backed by some of the world's leading venture capital firms, we're on an ambitious mission to simplify and modernize every function of the dental practice through technology. As we expand our reach globally, Dandy is building the operating system for dental offices around the world-empowering clinicians and their teams with technology, innovation, and world-class support to achieve more for their practices, their people, and their patients.
Shade &Aesthetic crown development requires precise traceability, attention to detail, and disciplined execution across a multi-step physical + digital workflow.
Today, this workflow spans:
Pre-milled crown inventory
Geometry-specific design
UUID + QR code association
Pegging and shade execution
Manual firing
AOI (automated optical inspection)
High-quality documentation for engineering analysis
Any breakdown of lost crowns, mixed geometries, incorrect QR associations, missing photos invalidates the experiment (DOE) and slows learning.
This role exists to:
Own the physical execution layer of aesthetic crown experiments and DOE's for overall machine metrics and yield improvements.
Act as the single point of accountability from crown prep → post-firing documentation
Ensure engineering can trust the data because the process was executed flawlessly!
Offer growth and development to an individual through technical experimentation and process improvement.
Core Requirement: Availability & Responsiveness
Must be available on-site in Provo (MST) within but not precisely core testing hours: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Monday to Friday
This role supports live experiments, machine availability, and engineering iteration cycles
Delays or gaps in availability directly block testing velocity
What This Role Must Do (End-to-End Ownership)
Understand the Active DOE
Know what experiment is being run
Understand:
What problem we are trying to solve or prove/disprove
What variable is changing
What must remain controlled
Execute the workflow exactly as defined by the DOE Documentation or Test Method (doc)
(This role does not design the experiment but must deeply understand it.)
Manage Pre-Milled / SAT Crown Inventory
Maintain awareness of:
Which crown geometries are currently in stock
Which geometries are required for upcoming tests
Aesthetic crown testing starts with pre-milled crowns
If crowns are not available:
Prepare crowns via sandblasting / recycling or
Initiate or coordinate new crown milling
Geometry Discipline & Organization
Crowns are designed on specific geometries
Each crown is milled out of a base shade (A1, B1, C1 and D2) and then get's shaded up. We must ensure extreme precision on matching shades.
Each crown must:
Stay paired with the correct geometry
Never be mixed or substituted mid-flow
Physical organization is critical to prevent invalid test results
UUID, QR Code & Design Association
Each crown design has:
A UUID
A QR code
The role ensures:
Correct crown geometry is placed into the correct bin
Each bin has the correct QR code
Pegging scans:
Bin QR code
Peg QR code
This “marries” the design file → peg → physical crown
This step guarantees the right shade design is applied to the right geometry
Shade Injection & Retrieval
Use of Akribis and P&T User interfaces.
Apply changes on machine parameters as printhead voltage, temperatures, etc.
Ability to perform printer start-up in case it's not being used or in production.
Ability and knowledge to check and ensure optimal printer operation before running tests
Pre-milled crowns are injected just before shade
Crowns are retrieved immediately after shade
Crowns are then delivered to the manual firing station
Critical rule:
No crowns lost.
No ambiguity.
Full accountability start to finish.
Manual Firing & Post-Processing
Track crowns through manual firing
Ensure fired crowns remain correctly identified and grouped
Photography & Engineering Documentation
Take high-quality photos of each crown:
Multiple angles
Consistent lighting
Clear detail
Photos must be:
Associated with the correct UUID
Matched to the testing sheet showing intended design outcome
These images are used directly for engineering evaluation and decisions
R&D Storage & Long-Term Traceability
Store completed crowns in the Engineering R&D locker
Maintain labeling and organization so crowns can be retrieved later for:
Comparisons
Audits
Follow-up testing
Nice to Have
Prior experience operating or supporting industrial equipment, printers, or automated machines.
Background as a technician or field service technician is a plus, but not required.
Basic familiarity with inkjet or printing equipment (loading parts, starting jobs, monitoring runs).
Comfort following standard operating procedures (SOPs) and checklists exactly as written.
Ability to recognize when a machine or process is not behaving normally and escalate issues appropriately.
Willingness to perform simple machine setup, startup, and recovery tasks under guidance.
Experience working in lab, pilot line, or manufacturing environments with physical parts and traceability requirements.
General mechanical aptitude and comfort working around equipment.
