Hawkins County School District company history timeline

1805

One of the first Masonic lodges in TN was organized in Rogersville on December 14, 1805.

1810

The circuit court for Hawkins County was organized on the first Monday in October, 1810, by William Cocke, judge of the First Judicial Circuit, who appointed Thomas Cocke, Clerk.

1815

Surgoinsville was established by an Act of the Legislature passed in October, 1815.

1825

The first chancery courts were held in 1825. the division consisted of Sullivan, Hawkins, Grainger and Claiborne Counties.

1836

The Hawkins County Courthouse was built in 1836, it is one of six antebellum courthouses still in use in Tennessee, and it is the oldest courthouse still in use in the state.

1887

1975

Cherokee High School opened in 1975 as the district's third high school.

1996

Price, Henry, Hawkins County: A Pictorial History. (Rogersville: 1996).

2001

Volume I. (Rogersville: 2001).

The school was known as simply Cherokee High School until the addition of the "South" building in 2001, at which time the original building was renamed as "Cherokee High School North."

2018

In 2018, with the retirement of the South principal, Leonard Iannelli, Cherokee eliminated the position, effectively merging the North and South building into one school.
