Chesapeake Public Schools company history timeline

1805

The canal finally opened in 1805, but experienced hard times over the years.

1850

Three aldermen were elected for Norfolk County in 1798 to carry out the provisions of an educational bill presented by Thomas Jefferson, and the first superintendent of schools, the Reverend Thomas Hume, was selected in 1850.

1858

Completion of the Albermarle and Chesapeake Canal in 1858 dealt a serious blow to the Dismal Swamp Canal.

1861

The first local encounter of the Civil War occurred at Sewell's Point in May 1861.

1870

The schools were closed during the Civil War and did not reopen until 1870.

1900

By 1900, South Norfolk had its own waterworks, public schools and a post office.

1961

In the fall of 1961, city and county officials met to discuss the feasibility of a merger.

1963

The city of Chesapeake, established in 1963, is the result of a merger between historic Norfolk County and the city of South Norfolk.
