Chicago Urban League company history timeline
Since 1916, the Chicago Urban League has helped people find jobs, secure affordable housing, enhance their educational experiences, and grow their businesses.
Organized in 1916, the Chicago Urban League was one of the first affiliates of the National Urban League.
Incorporated on June 13, 1917, the Chicago Urban League's interracial group of organizers included University of Chicago Professor of Sociology Robert E. Park as its first board president.
In 1955, Edwin C. (“Bill”) Berry was appointed Executive Director of the Chicago Urban League.
Executive Director Edwin Carlos “Bill” Berry made Chicago the Urban League's largest affiliate by 1958.
In 1972, James W. Compton became the League’s executive director.
Under his leadership, in 1975 the League became the first non-governmental agency authorized by the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners to register voters.
The mission of the Metropolitan Board - founded in 1983 by John Rogers and James Compton - is to identify and develop the leadership potential of African American young professionals in Chicago.
The Urban League moved into a newly built headquarters building at 4510 South Michigan Avenue, in January 1984.
In the fall of 2006, Cheryle R. Jackson became the first woman to be named president and CEO of the Chicago Urban League.
James Compton was the League’s longest-serving president and CEO, having led the organization for 34 years before his retirement in 2006.
In 2007, the League launched a strategic agenda that elevated its focus on economic development.
In September 2010, noted attorney, civic and business leader Andrea L. Zopp was named president and CEO of the Chicago Urban League.
Karen Freeman-Wilson became President & CEO in January 2020.
