Required Experience and Qualifications
H.S Diploma/GED
New York State Teacher Assistant Certification is required
Familiarity with high-quality curriculum programs.

Amber Charter Schools strictly follow a salary schedule for each role to ensure our continued commitment towards pay equity. The expected salary range for this role is $33,606 - $57,376, depending on verified relevant work experience, highest level of completed education, and required certifications and/or licenses for the role. This is an exempt position.

Head Start Assistant Teacher
DEPARTMENT: Early Childhood
REPORTS TO: Center Director
SALARY RANGE: $33,440.45 - $41,071.01 salary based on credentials; benefits include medical/dental, life insurance, 401k plan and vacation, personal and sick time-off
DATE: January 2026
SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday, 8 am-4 pm, or 9 am-5 pm. Schedule may vary due to program needs.
JOB SUMMARY: The Assistant Teacher will work collaboratively with the Lead Teacher to ensure the successful operation of a classroom with a total of 15-20 children. The Assistant Teacher also works with a team of other classroom teachers and family members to implement the curriculum to achieve outcomes for children of all abilities.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum - Associates in Early Childhood Education; BA/BS in Early Childhood Education preferred.
Minimum two years of previous teaching experience
Ability to work with children and families with special developmental, social or cultural needs
Ability to maintain written records and manage time to ensure the completion of assigned work
Ability to foster and maintain positive, professional relationships with participating families
Basic computer literacy in email, Microsoft Office.
Obtain CPR and First Aid certification within the first year of employment.
PRE- EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
Clearance through DOI Fingerprint Screening, NYS Central Registry, Sex Offender Registry clearance, 3 reference checks, physical examination with updated TB test, Varicella, Tdap, MMR (fees may apply)
Obtain Mandated Reporter training certificate (every 2 years) and comply with agency's policy and procedure regarding identification and reporting of child abuse and neglect
Obtain First Aid/CPR and Preventive Infectious Diseases Certificate within the first year of employment
Meet all employee health requirements in Article 47 (DOHMH) and Head Start Performance Standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direct supervision of the Center Director, the Assistant Teacher shall be responsible for:
Child Growth & Development: Implements a child-centered curriculum to its fidelity and learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation to promote development in all domains for children of all abilities.
Planning: Responsible for collaborating with the Lead Teacher in the preparation of daily lesson plans and individualization for children. Collect daily anecdotes and write observations for children. Assess children with Teaching Strategies Gold online three times a year
Program Implementation: Provide positive guidance and discipline supporting children as they acquire readiness skills for kindergarten and beyond
Family Partnerships: Encourage parent participation in staff-parent conferences and home visits discussing their child's development and education
Communication and Service Coordination: Maintain regular contact with parents and complete appropriate documentation; Direct developmental concerns to the Health, Nutrition and Disabilities Coordinator
Record Keeping and Reporting: Request supplies as needed and participate in classroom/program inventory as requested
On-going Monitoring and Self-Assessment: Work with teaching team to analyze child outcomes on a classroom basis two- three times a year
Collaborate with family advocates and coordinators in providing high quality comprehensive services
Participate in coaching opportunities and professional development training development
Ability to lift 35 pounds
Other duties as assigned

Job Description Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation has an opening for a full time Assistant Teacher in the United Community Centers Division for the Early Learning Center Program . The Assistant teacher is responsible for supporting a learning environment based on the Creative Curriculum approach that helps the children develop physically, emotionally, socially, cognitively and creatively. They are responsible for complying with procedural norms, standards of attendance, and daycare regulations . Supervised by the Director of Early Learning Center, the assistant teacher helps make the center a warm, welcoming environment.
Duties
Ensure a learning environment based on the Creative Curriculum approach that helps the children develop physically, emotionally, socially, cognitively and creatively.
Support the implementation of activities that will promote social, emotional, cognitive, physical and creative development of children.
Adhere to all Head Start Performance standards in addition to the Agency mandates of United Community Day Care center.
Assume responsibility for the operation of the classroom, in the absence of the Group Teacher, thus holding the teacher aide and substitute accountable to their duties and responsibilities.
Share job related knowledge with team members so as to promote and support their professional growth.
Participate in regularly scheduled staff team meetings, classroom development workshops on and off site as well as training conducted by UCDCC, ACS and other funders.
performs center- related services/activities such as parent/teacher conferences, transition meetings, end of year celebrations, etc.
Share information regarding children and the program with parents via daily contact and informal/formal interfacings, newsletters, etc.
Encourage parents in their role as their children's primary teachers by acting as resource person (i.e.: disseminating information, actively listening to parents, offering suggestions, etc.).
Establish and maintain positive relationships with parents/families via open communications, training and other developmental activities
Elicit input from teacher aide to complete written observations, progress reports, outcomes reporting, CROWD and other documents relevant to the tracking of children's progress.
Assist Group Teachers utilize information obtained via observations, conferences, tracking, etc. to design developmentally appropriate and individualized lesson plans.
Adhere to Agency (UCDCC) policies and procedures; seeks guidance/clarification from Educational Director re: interpretation, applicability and implementation.
Strictly adhere to, and enforce, the Agency policy regarding Confidentiality and HIPAA requirements.
Demonstrates commitment to leadership development, community building, and community organizing as strategies for social change.
Other related duties as assigned, consistent with the above.
Requirements
The assistant teacher shall meet the requirements set by the Agency for NYC Department of Education.
Be at least eighteen years old; and
Possess a high school diploma or equivalent (GED); and
Must be willing to obtain the a valid Level 1 or higher NY State Teaching Assistant certification or a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential during first 6 months of employment
Must clear DOE fingerprinting and background authorizations.
Daily access to reliable transportation to Brooklyn, NY.
Physical Requirements - Frequent sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, seeing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling.Occasional running. Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
