They practice under the direction of the Medical Director of the ICU and other Intensivists in a manner consistent with both the Massachusetts Board and hospital policy. The APP will also work collaboratively with surgeons and/or Hospitalists on the medical-surgical floor. The APP is primarily responsible for the assessment, admission, stabilization, and ongoing management of patients in the ICU under the direction of the Intensivist. Job Description:Essential Responsibilities: In collaboration with the physician completes pre-admission history and physical examination. Ensures that all requisite testing is completed.Coordinates elements of the treatment plan and assesses, evaluates and documents patient progress. Reviews patient care management issues with the Intensivist. Consults with appropriate resources as needed.Reviews results of laboratory and other diagnostic tests and formulates an interpretation.Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including but not limited to: Insertion or removal of central venous lines, insertion of nasogastric tubes or other enteral feeding tubes, insertion of arterial lines, bladder catheterization, phlebotomy and IV insertion, and electrocardiograms.Enters orders for the initial ICU admission and subsequent ICU care. Is responsible for making daily rounds on patients alone and/or with intensivist or surgical team; report findings to attending physician. Places orders in the EMR.Is responsible for preparing patients for discharge and completing documentation for same. Participates in discharge conferences as appropriate/necessary. Completes patient care referrals and coordination of care as necessary.Participates in the quality improvement/quality assurance program.May be responsible for communicating patient hospital summary directly to referring physician.Educates, instructs and counsels patients and families.
