Children's Defense Fund company history timeline
Children’s Defense Fund-Minnesota, founded in 1985, is a state partner of the national organization with a unique focus on the needs of Minnesota’s children and families.
Established in 1992, the Children’s Defense Fund-New York (CDF-NY) office has a unique approach to improving conditions for children, combining research, public education, policy development, community organizing, and advocacy.
When Bill Clinton became President in 1993, CDF staffers hoped for child-friendly policies.
In 1996 she founded a similar organization, Stand for Children.

CDF-CA was established in 1998 to meet the needs of underserved children in the state of California.
In 2000 Edelman received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian award, and the Robert F. Kennedy Lifetime Achievement Award for her writings.

By 2003 the CDF employed a staff of 130, raised and spent about $25 million a year from private corporations as it continued its advocacy work for the most needy and underserved children.
In 2008 the CDF was selected as a beneficiary of the Idol Gives Back campaign, a televised fund-raising event sponsored by the hit reality-television show American Idol.
