Experience * No minimum experience required Preferred Qualifications * Experience in a high complexity clinical laboratory * Bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemical, biological, or clinical laboratory science form an accredited institution Education * Associate's degree in a chemical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution; or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting the requirements defined in the CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489 Certification Summary * American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent medical laboratory technician or Department of Community Health Diagnostics Services Unit technician qualifications Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities * Independent judgment with minimum technical supervision * Strives for adult-adult relationships with colleagues, subordinates, and superiors Job Responsibilities * Processes orders and specimens, independently performs testing procedures, and reports test results according to standard operating procedures. * Demonstrates familiarity with and follows hospital and departmental policies and procedures, including those pertaining to safety and compliance. * Uses critical thinking principles in decision making that leads to desired outcomes. * Operates instruments using established protocols and quality assurance check and performs preventive and corrective maintenance on instruments. * Correlates results with patient age and/or condition, recognizes deviation from expected results, and analyzes and corrects problems using standard operating procedures. * Performs, records, and analyzes quality control data, makes judgments concerning results, and takes appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision. * Maintains current professional skills and technical competency as defined by laboratory competency policy. * Actively promotes a lean culture by performing duties to promote an understanding and consistent use of lean principals and processes. * Performs other duties as required by department. Option 1: Four ten-hour shifts per week. * Schedule: 9:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. Option 2: Five eight-hour shifts per week. * Schedule: 11:00 a.m. - 7:30 p.m., Monday - Friday Experience * 3 years of experience in a high complexity clinical laboratory Preferred Qualifications * Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology, chemical, biological, or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution * Eligible for Georgia Department of Human Resources supervisor classification * Flow Cytometry Technical and Analysis experience preferred * Strong Hematology background * Polished micropipetting technique necessary * Experienced in laboratory math calculations * BD Flow Cytometry training Education * Associates degree in a chemical, biological, or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution; or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting the requirements defined in the CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489 Certification Summary * American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent medical technologist or medical laboratory scientist Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities * Independent judgment and responsibility with minimum technical supervision * Strong organizational capabilities and good communication skills * Exhibits enthusiasm and willingness to work with others * Strives for adult-adult relationships with colleagues, subordinates, and superiors Job Responsibilities * Performs technical functions of Medical Technologist as outlined in job description and other duties as required by department. * Follows departmental and system policies and procedures, including those pertaining to compliance and safety. * Performs administrative tasks to include but not limited to revision of forms, training checklists/ job aides, regulatory documents to include CAP crosswalks. * Ensures services are delivered in a fiscally responsible manner through management of staff workflow, and supply inventory. * Provides technical support for staff and acts as a preceptor for staff training assists in training and orientation of new employees. * Designee for competencies (if qualified). * Performs quality control, instrument validation, maintenance review and troubleshooting task appropriate action to maintain accuracy and precision. * Acts as a resource tech on off shifts. * Performs and is competent in specialty testing. * Actively promotes a lean culture by performing duties to promote an understanding and consistent use of lean principals and processes. * Initiates and leads implementation of at least 3 leadership approved lean process improvement ideas per year. * Performs duties, makes decisions, takes actions, and continually strives to improve work processes using an awareness of how work performed is valued by the customer. Description * Performs various laboratory tests and procedures while adhering to standard operating procedures on patient specimens to assist in the diagnosis, study and treatment, or prevention of disease. * Upholds the values of the organization including providing and demonstrating exemplary customer service skills throughout the preanalytical, analytical and post analytical processes. * May perform tests including but not limited to standardized and semi-routine biological, chemical, hematological, immunological, immunohematological, microbiological, and serological tests in a research or clinical laboratory. * Performs preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments * and calibrates equipment and instruments as required. * Operates laboratory equipment and troubleshoots equipment and instrument malfunctions. * May serve as key operator for implementation of new equipment and procedures. Prepares reagents as needed. * Monitors and ensures adequate inventory supply. * May be responsible for ordering. * Responsible for quality control. * Assists in gathering data to monitor quality improvement standards and in preparing reports. * Evaluates the validity of acceptable specimens and test results; compares them to previous results and other laboratory data. * Identifies critical values, confirms and reports following standard operating procedures. * In complex cases, evaluates all information and determines whether test results should be released, repeated, or referred to a pathologist. * Refers abnormal or unexpected results to the appropriate individual(s). * Maintains accurate and complete documentation of patient information, equipment, and test results to comply with regulations. * Documents corrective actions taken for out of range test values. Maintains clean, orderly and safe work area. * May serve on laboratory's safety committee; write and maintain safety and infection control policies and procedures, and ensure correct Safety Data Sheets are maintained. * Complies with hospital and laboratory safety and infection control policies and procedures to prevent exposure to infectious materials. * May monitor staff during safety compliance audits or drills. * Performs required calculation and reports results by phone and/or computer. * Audits computer reports to ensure that scheduled tests have been completed. * Assists in gathering data to monitor quality improvement standards and in preparing reports. * May independently research and assist in development of new procedures; compile and evaluate data and perform statistical analyses. * May be responsible for section's data base files and/or assist in software testing. * Educates staff and students by demonstrating procedures and assisting in orientation and continuing education activities. * May teach medical technology theory and techniques while providing guidance to lower level technologists; develop teaching plans and student assessment tools; prepare written examinations. * Attends educational in-services as appropriate. * Maintains certification as required. * Works with leader to formulate plan for professional development. * Participates in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments. * May perform venipuncture or capillary puncture to obtain blood specimen. * Perform other related duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: * Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology, or a chemical, physical or biological science. * Other bachelor's degree will be accepted if graduated from an accredited school and science and math coursework meet requirements of certifying agency. Bachelor's degree may be waived for a medical technologist who was ASCP certified in the years prior to the bachelor's degree requirement by ASCP and a HEW/HHS technologist certified by Health and Human Services. * Certified by one of the following accreditation agencies: MT (ASCP), MLS (ASCP), MT (AMT), MT (HHS or HEW), MT (AAB), generalist or categorical if applicable. * Two years experience required. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium): 20-50 lbs; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks. Description 7a-5:30/ PRN/ 10 Hours We're seeking a PRN GID Lab Technician for The Emory Clinic, Decatur responsible for being a capable certified technician who cares about the quality of their work an ensuring the safety for all patients. This individual will: * Assists the gastroenterologist with procedures such as gastroscopy, dilatation, colonoscopy, electrocoaugtery, flexible protoscopy, anoscopy, peritoneoscopy, liver biopsy, sclerosis, motility, secretin studies, gastric analysis, small bowel endoscopy, transesophageal cardiography, or other procedures. * Assists the gastroenterologist with specimen collection for biopsy, cytology, fecal, viral cultures, duedenal aspirate, and others. May start/discontinue IV fluids, administer enemas, operate EKG and other monitoring equipment, pass N-G tubes, begin and assist in CPR, administer oxygen, monitor vital signs during endoscopy or recovery room procedures and notify the physician of any abnormalities or significant changes. * Teaches patients about procedure to be performed using verbal explanations, pamphlets and relevant audiovisual aids. Requests physician or nurse to address and answer patients' questions before and after procedure is completed. * Verifies that a properly signed consent form is obtained prior to any procedure. * Instructs transporters to pick-up and discharge patients from nursing units or other hospital departments and/or GID Lab. May be required to transport both in-patients and outpatients to and from GID Lab by wheelchair or stretcher. Performs techniques using specialized equipment such as endoscopes, light sources, and GID accessory equipment, cautery and photocoagulation, monitoring equipment, peritoneoscopy equipment, motility machines, or other related equipment. * Keeps procedure rooms stocked with supplies and equipment and maintains work areas to keep them clean and dust free. Keeps accurate and complete records of procedure charges, data sheets, specimen/laboratory slips, medicines given, adverse reactions, equipment sent for repair, and other required documentation. Performs other related duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: * One year of experience as a Gastrointestinal Laboratory Technician OR current licensure as a Practical Nurse (LPN) * OR four years of Gastrointestinal Laboratory Instrument Technician experience/ * OR three years of Nursing Technician II experience.
