An Ultrasound Technologist (also known as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer) is responsible for performing medical imaging procedures using ultrasound equipment to create images or videos of a patient's internal structures. These images are then analyzed by physicians to diagnose a variety of medical conditions, including conditions related to pregnancy, abdominal issues, vascular problems, and more. Ultrasound technologists must possess strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to make patients feel comfortable during procedures. Key Responsibilities: Pre-Procedure Preparation: Review patient medical history and physician orders to ensure the correct type of ultrasound procedure is performed. Prepare ultrasound equipment, ensuring it is functioning properly and has the necessary settings adjusted for the procedure. Explain the ultrasound procedure to the patient, addressing any questions or concerns to reduce anxiety. Confirm the patient's identity, verify any contraindications (e.g., allergies to contrast agents), and ensure proper documentation is completed. Conducting Ultrasound Scans: Position patients properly on the examination table to capture clear, high-quality images. Apply a conductive gel to the patient's skin to facilitate the transmission of sound waves, ensuring the patient is comfortable during the process. Operate ultrasound equipment, adjusting settings such as depth, focus, and frequency to capture optimal images of organs, tissues, or blood flow. Use a hand-held ultrasound transducer (probe) to move over the patient's body and capture images or videos of the target area. Obtain diagnostic-quality images and videos of organs, blood vessels, muscles, or fetuses (if performing obstetric ultrasounds). Patient Safety and Comfort: Ensure patient comfort and safety during the ultrasound procedure, explaining each step and providing reassurance. Monitor the patient for signs of discomfort or distress and adjust positioning or equipment settings as needed. Address patient concerns or discomfort, particularly for patients who may be anxious or nervous about the procedure. Ensure a clean and sterile environment, adhering to infection control standards. Image Analysis and Reporting: Capture high-quality, diagnostic images that meet the criteria for medical evaluation and diagnosis. Review and analyze ultrasound images for clarity and completeness before submitting them to the physician or radiologist. Provide preliminary findings or impressions based on ultrasound images to the physician, while adhering to professional and legal guidelines. Ensure that all images are labeled correctly and stored in the hospital's electronic health record (EHR) system or PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System). Post-Procedure Care: Assist the patient after the procedure, ensuring they are stable and comfortable before leaving the examination room. Remove any gel from the patient's skin and offer tissues or towels for cleaning. Provide patients with aftercare instructions, especially if additional follow-up appointments or tests are required. Advise patients to follow up with their physician for review of results or further treatment. Equipment Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Regularly inspect and maintain ultrasound equipment, ensuring it is functioning properly and in good working condition. Perform basic troubleshooting for equipment malfunctions, and report technical issues to the appropriate team for repair. Ensure the ultrasound probe is properly cleaned and sanitized between patients, following infection control protocols. Documentation and Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate records of procedures performed, including patient information, images, and reports. Ensure all documentation is completed in compliance with hospital policies, regulatory standards, and patient confidentiality guidelines (e.g., HIPAA). Ensure that images and results are stored correctly and are readily accessible for review by physicians or radiologists. Collaboration with Medical Team: Work closely with physicians, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals to provide accurate imaging for diagnosis and treatment. Communicate effectively with physicians and other medical staff to discuss the quality of images or any potential findings that may require further investigation. Assist in preparing reports or other documentation as needed for medical records or treatment planning. Professional Development and Training: Participate in continuing education opportunities, staying current with the latest advancements in ultrasound technology and imaging techniques. Obtain and maintain certifications and licensure required for ultrasound technology, including RDMS (Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer) certification and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Job Summary Responsible for specialization in imaging a patient's heart. This role uses ultrasound equipment to examine the heart's chambers, valves, and vessels. Use both color flow and spectral Doppler to accurately evaluate cardiac stenotic and regurgitant lesions, and intracardiac shunts and other hemodynamically significant lesions. * Evaluate the hemodynamic significance of various cardiac disease states using all imaging modalities available in accordance with the department's protocols. * Operate ultrasound system and assist exercise physiologist and RN during dobutamine and stress echocardiography. * Perform diagnostic cardiovascular examinations according to standardized laboratory protocols; deviating from normal techniques when necessary to provide the best possible results. * Perform diagnostic cardiovascular examinations, recognizing the significance of all structures that are visualized, differentiating artifacts from appropriate structures, while recognizing the limitations of equipment and utilizing knowledge of anatomy and physiology. * Review patient's medical record to obtain necessary clinical information including patient history, lab results, and physician orders. * Obtains necessary clinical information from patients and compares requisitions to physicians' orders to ensure exam accuracy. In this role you will perform performs cardiac ultrasound examinations on patients encompassing normal cardiac anatomy to complex congenital heart disease. You will conduct examinations independently during all phases of care: diagnostic, pre-operative, under anesthesia, post-operative with complex surgical repairs. New hires may be eligible for a sign on bonus up to $15,000.00 Key Responsibilities: * Supervise provision of echocardiography examinations within non-invasive lab. Monitor performance and provides assistance to ensure examinations are performed according to established protocols. * Plan case methodology and conduct comprehensive examinations in laboratory or with portable equipment at other locations as needed. * Establish supportive relationship with patients and families. Explain examination procedures to patients/parents and notifies them of scheduling problems or changes * Maintain and evaluate lab equipment. Monitor and maintain inventory of standard supplies, initiating reorder of items according to established par levels. Prepare and maintain required logs and records. * Provide instruction on performing echocardiography procedures and interpretation of results for sonographers, trainees and fellows. * Assist in clinical research studies. Explain protocols to staff and oversees collection of required clinical data. Minimum Qualifications Education: * Completion of high school or equivalent education. Bachelor's degree in appropriate field (i.e., healthcare, nursing, biology, etc.) preferred * Completion of an accredited Cardiac Ultrasound program in pediatric echocardiography. * Pediatric echocardiography specialty preferred. Experience: * 2 years' clinical experience in pediatric echocardiography required; 5 years preferred Licensure/ Certifications: * Pediatric Echocardiography (RDCS PE) * A current Basic Life Support certification (BLS) in accordance with American Heart Association standards is required. The posted pay range is Boston Children's reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting.
