A Brief Overview The Division of Genomic Diagnostics at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is seeking a talented and motivated individual to join our CAP/CLIA-certified Genomic Diagnostics Laboratory to support test development and sample processing. The ideal candidates will have a basic understanding of molecular biology and the potential to learn new technologies such as next generation sequencing quickly and efficiently. Must be a good team player. Job Responsibilities: * Perform wet bench sample processing for test development or clinical testing, including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR/Sanger sequencing, NGS based DNA sequencing and RNA sequencing, MLPA, fragment analysis, TaqMan SNP genotyping, SNP microarray. * Perform preliminary data analysis such as data quality control. * Maintain lab quality management programs; participate and support lab's effort to ensure regulatory compliance. What you will do * Accurately performs routine to moderately complex diagnostic tests or procedures as assigned in multiple laboratory sections (skill inventory) and reports results through appropriate channels. Completes, evaluates and records all appropriate quality controls and quality assurance markers. Activates troubleshooting procedures when necessary and trains others to perform this responsibility when assigned. Effectively trains others on new methods, technical procedures and practices. * Assists others (as appropriate based on skill level) with expertise of advance experience and or training (skill inventory) as necessary for laboratory operation. * Performs preventative/safety maintenance on equipment and maintains a safe, clean and efficient work environment. Takes initiative in problem solving equipment failures to the extent capable. Communicates unresolved issues to supervisor or designee. Complies with personal protective equipment (PPE) and other laboratory and hospital safety standards 100% of the time. Notifies supervisor of unsafe events. Responsibly controls and maintains inventory. Trains others to perform this responsibility when assigned. * Provides professional, courteous and calm customer service to both internal and external customers. Identifies appropriate resources and sources for re-directed inquiries. Acts as a reference source for laboratory procedures within their skill inventory as necessary. * Regularly reviews operational procedure manuals. Maintains individual annual technical competency assessments. Actively identifies and pursues learning needs. Actively participates in departmental and continuing education meetings. Successfully completes 12 units of approved continuing education activities during evaluation cycle. Education Qualifications * Bachelor's Degree Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or other science related fields - Required Experience Qualifications * At least one (1) year experience and a minimal, demonstrated tech skill inventory - Required * CAP/CLIA certified lab experience Preferred * Molecular Biology experience Preferred * Next generation sequencing experience Preferred * The department would also consider entry level, new graduates with relevant experience as an MLS I Skills and Abilities * Exhibits the ability to work with computer programs and computer controlled equipment. What you will do * Leadership Roles and Responsibilities * Direct, supervise, and evaluate work activities of Central Lab Services staff. * Establish work schedules and assignments for staff to ensure appropriate shift coverage. * Enforce all laboratory policies and safety guidelines including evacuation procedures. * In partnership with the Central Lab Supervisor, handle performance evaluations, personnel disciplinary action, and hiring when required. * Conduct daily staff huddles. * Update Central Lab Supervisor with problems or concerns. * Ensure laboratory is sufficiently stocked with supplies and equipment is in proper working order. * Actively coordinate with Central Lab Services management for all shifts. * Provides performance management for staff. * Quality Assurance * Act as a primary contact for Care Providers, Laboratory Sections, Client Services, and Couriers. * Institute computer/tube system downtime procedures and communications. * Ensure that procedures and methods are performed as defined. * Provide problem resolution and communication for sample handling, split specimens, specimen retrieval, lost specimens, and specimen requests. * Ensure equipment maintenance is completed and documented. * Track and follow up on any unresolved specimen issues. * Actively initiate and participate in intra- and inter- departmental process improvements * Training * Oversee technical, CHOP ICARE and Service Standards, and safety training for new employees. * Provide employee retraining and documentation for errors. * Coordinate with departmental leadership to ensure all employees have valid competency documentation. * Coordinate Central Lab Services training for other departments. * Provide detailed knowledge of specimen collection, specimen processing, send-outs, and specimen handling to Care Providers and Laboratory Sections. * Create and update job aids to provide collection, process, and/or handling education for departmental staff as well as Care Providers and Laboratory Sections as needed. * Phlebotomy and Processing * Active in central lab services / processing specimens for both internal laboratories and send-out reference laboratories. * Assist Central Lab Services Supervisors in writing and updating procedures. * Other duties as assigned by Central Lab Services leadership team Schedule * Monday - Friday: 6:00am - 2:30pm * Rotating weekend/holiday coverage (not mandatory) Education Qualifications * High School Diploma / GED - Required * Bachelor's Degree healthcare or related field - Preferred Experience Qualifications * At least one (1) year clinical lab experience in a pediatric institution - Required * At least three (3) years clinical laboratory experience - Preferred * Leadership experience - Preferred Skills and Abilities * Knowledge: basic biology, basic chemistry, English language, customer service, public safety and security, clerical, education and training, economics and accounting, personnel and human resources, administration and management * Technology skills: electronic mail software, medical software, Microsoft Office suite, organizational software, document management software * Other skills: active listening, reading comprehension, critical thinking, speaking, complex problem solving, monitoring, time management, writing, active learning, coordination, judgment and decision making, service orientation, social perceptiveness, instructing, persuasion, management of personnel resources, systems evaluation, negotiation, operations analysis, management of financial resources, learning strategies, management of material resources * Abilities: oral expression, near vision, problem sensitivity, oral comprehension, written comprehension, deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning, speech clarity, speech recognition, written expression, information ordering, category flexibility, fluency of ideas, originality Licenses and Certifications * Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) - The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) - upon hire - Preferred To carry out its mission, CHOP is committed to supporting the health of our patients, families, workforce, and global community.
