Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU company history timeline

1921

1921 – Kappa Delta sorority adopted Crippled Children’s Hospital as its national philanthropy

1928

By 1928, the clinic had grown into a new hospital, operating under the name Crippled Children's Hospital, that was funded by a generous bequest of $500,000 from Sallie May Dooley.

1928 – Hospital established affiliation with Orthopaedic Department at the Medical College of Virginia

1934

Ten years later, the first woman was appointed as a faculty member in the Department of Pediatrics, and in 1934, the pediatric residency program began at MCV with a woman as the first pediatric resident.

1958

1958 – Facial deformities clinic established through partnership with hospital, Doctor Leroy Smith and Department of Dentistry at MCV

1971

1971 – Doctor Ralph Ownby appointed first medical director at Crippled Children’s Hospital, and full-time pediatric residency program in partnership with MCV established

1973

1973 – Outpatient clinic opened as patients require shorter hospital stays

1973 – First neonatal ICU established in central Virginia

1980

By 1980, the hospital had grown from its roots as a free hospital for children with orthopaedic problems into a multi-specialty hospital open to all children.

In 1980, Crippled Children's Hospital changed their name to Children's Hospital to better reflect the variety of services offered.

1982

1982 – Hospital changed its name to Children’s Hospital

1984

1984 – First Children’s Miracle Network telethon held to benefit Children’s Hospital and Children’s Medical Center at MCV

2005

The Greenwood Leflore Hospital Foundation was created in August of 2005 as the philanthropic arm of Greenwood Leflore Hospital.

2010

On June 30, 2010, Children's Hospital and Children's Medical Center at MCV merged to become a full-service hospital under the new name Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU.

2011

On November 7, 2011, doctors from Children's Hospital of Richmond performed a 20-hour-long surgery to separate conjoined twins, Maria and Teresa Tapia.

2011 – First pediatric hospitalist program established

2012

In 2012, VCU broke ground on a new $168 million, 640,000-square-foot outpatient children's pavilion.

2013

In 2013 VCU Health entered into an agreement with Bon Secours Health to form the Virginia Children's Hospital Alliance.

2015

Later that year, In 2015, both VCU and Bon Secours both dropped out of the alliance due to the disapproval of the agreement forcing each system to migrate their pediatric services to the new freestanding system.

2016

The new facility opened on March 21, 2016.

2018

2018 – Virginia Treatment Center for Children opened

2019

In February 2019, VCU officials announced plans to build an 86-bed, $350 million children's hospital adjacent to its outpatient children's pavilion in downtown Richmond.

2022

The new hospital also will contain shell-space for future growth and is planned to open in 2022.
