Children's Theatre company history timeline

1965

Among prominent figures in children’s theaters abroad are L. Chancerelle (France), P. Slade (Great Britain), and G. Snuk (Netherlands). In 1965 the International Association of Theaters for Children and Young People was created.

1971

In 1971 in the USSR there were about 100 puppet theaters performing for audiences of younger school-age children.

1977

In 1977, the first Children’s Theatre Wingspread Conference was held in Racine, Wisconsin.

1980

The first showcase for professional children’s theatre was held in 1980.

1982

1982 marked the year of the formation of the Symposia on Issues in Creative Drama Committee.

1983

As many theatres throughout the country have experienced, SCT lost much of our City funding in 1983.

1984

Longtime Seattle actor and director Linda Hartzell (Artistic Director Emerita) assumed the role of Artistic Director in 1984, and SCT quickly began to thrive, breaking attendance records faster than you can say Go Dog Go.

1987

In 1987, AATY merged with the American Association for Theatre in Secondary Education (AATSE) to form the American Alliance for Theatre and Education (AATE).

1990

In 1990, SCT was named the recipient of a $1.2 million foundation grant, which would fund the new Seattle Children’s Theatre space on the grounds of Seattle Center.

1993

In 1993, much to the joy of enthusiastic children and families, the 482-seat Charlotte Martin Theatre was open to the public.

1998

2000

SCT continued to be the gracious recipient of generous contributions in 2000, when the Allen Family Technical Pavilion was completed.

2004

Piggle-Wiggle (April 27, 2004-June 20, 2004) CTC On Tour: Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse

2005

Founded in 2005, the critically acclaimed Chicago Children’s Theatre focuses on the production of first-rate children’s theatre in Chicago, with top writing, performing, and directorial talent and high-quality design and production expertise.

2017

In 2017, Chicago Children’s Theatre began performing in their new home, the former Chicago Police Station for the 12th Precinct.

2019

Chicago Children’s Theatre is the recipient of the National Artistic Innovation Award 2019 from Theatre for Young Audiences USA.

2020

By the end of the 2020 SCT will have produced over 269 plays, 120 of which are world premieres entertaining, inspiring and educating over 4 million children.
