China Mobile company history timeline

1997

China Mobile Limited (the “Company”, and together with its subsidiaries, the “Group”) was incorporated in Hong Kong on 3 September 1997.

The company was founded on September 3, 1997 and is headquartered in Hong Kong.“

The Company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange (“NYSE”) and The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited (“HKEX” or the “Hong Kong Stock Exchange”) on 22 October 1997 and 23 October 1997, respectively.

1997: China Telecom's network becomes the world's second largest fixed-line telephone network, with more than 100 million lines.

1998

In March 1998, the government had passed a telecommunications law that changed the regulatory structure and allowed more competition in the industry.

Business was good, with revenues for the first three quarters of 1998 at US$20 billion.

More than 20.8 million new customers joined in 1998, including 7.7 million cellular-phone customers.

1999

In May 1999, China Telecom's paging division, Guoxin Paging, was handed over to China Unicom.

The First Breakup: 1999

The breaking up of the company finally began in 1999 and took more than two years to complete.

2000

Part of the company's goal was to enhance the nationwide transmission network as well, as the actual number of telephone users for the year 2000 turned out to be more than twice the projected number.

In 2000, the mobile operations were spun into a separate company called China Mobile, and soon became the second largest mobile network in the world.

2002

2002: China Telecom is reorganized into China Netcom Communication Group Corporation in the Northern provinces and China Telecom Corporation in the Southern provinces.

2004

China Telecom (Hong Kong) Limited completed an equity offering of approximately US$2 billion and an offering of global notes of US$600 million due 2004.

2005

China Mobile (Hong Kong) Limited completed an equity offering of approximately US$6.865 billion and an offering of convertible notes of US$690 million due 2005.

2008

In May 2008, the company took over China Tietong, a fixed-line telecom and the then third-largest broadband ISP in China adding Internet services to its core business of mobile services.

2021

On 7 May 2021, the NYSE filed a Form 25 with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (the “US SEC”) to strike the Company’s ADSs from listing and registration, which have taken effect on 18 May 2021.

As of 31 December 2021, the Group had a total of 449,934 employees, and a total of 957 million mobile customers and 240 million wireline broadband customers, with its annual revenue totalling RMB848.3 billion.

In December 2021, China Mobile announced that its international arm would cease operations in Canada due to national security concerns by the Canadian government.

The China Mobile brand was once again listed in BrandZ™ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands 2021 by Millward Brown ranking 68.

In 2021, the Company was once again selected as one of The Global 2,000 World’s Largest Public Companies by Forbes magazine and Fortune Global 500 by Fortune magazine.

2022

On 5 January 2022, the Company’s RMB ordinary shares (“RMB Shares” or “A-Shares”) were listed on the Main Board of Shanghai Stock Exchange (“SSE”).
