1890

Rosemary Hall, a school for girls, was founded in 1890 by Mary Atwater Choate.

1896

The Choate School, for boys only, was founded and endowed by Judge William Gardiner Choate in 1896.

In Denmark coeducation extends back to the 18th century, and in Norway coeducation was adopted by law in 1896.

In 1896 Mary’s husband, Judge William G. Choate, established The Choate School for boys on the same family property in Wallingford.

1900

In 1900, Rosemary Hall moved its campus to Greenwich, and another 70 years would pass before Rosemary Hall “came home” to Wallingford.

1974

Choate and Rosemary Hall were merged into a single coeducational institution in 1974.

After the merger in 1974, the combined school built on the strengths of its common roots and shared purpose, inspiring excellence for future generations of students.

Revelations of systemic sexual abuse of children stretch back to 2002, when abuse by Catholic priests received widespread attention after a series of articles published in The Globe.

2011

In 2011, Jerry Sandusky, a former assistant football coach at Penn State, was arrested, and later convicted, on charges of rampant sexual abuse; it became clear that the university had willfully averted its eyes, allowing his attacks to go on for years.
