By 2005, Euphrates had some $2 million in sales and was barely breaking even.
Ulukaya scraped together funding to buy an old yogurt plant in upstate New York in 2005, with help from a Small Business Administration Loan.
In 2007, his dream to make delicious, nutritious, natural, and accessible yogurt finally came to fruition, when the very first cup of Chobani® Greek Yogurt hit the shelf.
Ulukaya started Chobani in 2007 in Johnstown, NY, and while he had early success selling his product to grocers in New York, his start-up really took off when he heard about the empty Kraft plant.
By 2010, Chobani had grown from one man’s dream into America’s favorite Greek Yogurt.
EBITDA turned negative in 2013 and debt started to run up.
He's also the author of the newly released Who Needs the Fed? (Encounter Books), along with Popular Economics (Regnery, 2015).
In 2016, Chobani® Flip® was recognized as a Nielsen Breakthrough Innovation Award winner.
In 2018, the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan bought out TPG at a ‘handsome profit.’ Ulukaya seemed content with his new partner: “It’s about long-term thinking, having a long-term partner and getting more control back.”
In 2019, Chobani started unveiling a series of innovations in four new categories beyond yogurt: oatmilk, dairy and plant-based coffee creamers, ready-to-drink cold brew coffee and plant-based probiotic drinks.
