    Job Description Certified Medical Assistant Job Summary: The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) is a member of the health care delivery team and is responsible for and accountable to the patients. The CMA performs delegated clinical duties within the supervising clinician's scope of practice and consistent with the CMA's education, training, and experience. A CMA's duties may include the following: taking medical histories, assisting during patient procedures/examinations, collecting, and preparing laboratory specimens, venipuncture, performing basic in-house laboratory tests, taking vital signs, administering injections, using various pain scales to screen for pain, EKGs, and nebulizer treatments. This is a nonexempt, full-time position in pay grade 3 with the pay range of $19.14 - $24.88. The Certified Medical Assistant reports directly to the Medical Clinical Care Director. Required Skills/Abilities: Working knowledge of automated patient data systems. Must demonstrate the ability to use medical equipment and materials safely. Must be proficient in computer skills. Must be proficient in venipuncture, calculating doses of medications, injections, EKG's, nebulizer treatments, pain screening, collection and preparation of laboratory specimens and performing basic in-house laboratory tests. Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent Certificate of completion from an accredited medical assistant program. Certification must remain current during the entire course of employment. Minimum six months' experience preferred. Duties/Responsibilities: Initial Patient Assessment and Health Data Collection Collects health status data relevant to the patient's presenting problem in a continuous, systemic, and complete manner. Completes all components of a patient intake accurately, including but not limited to vital signs, chief complaint, medication reconciliation, allergies, surgical history, family history, quality measures, depression screening, alcohol/drug screening, and tobacco screening. Reconciles past medical information into current EHR system per protocol. Consistently documents in the Electronic Health Record according to established procedures. Properly prepares patient for Clinician by following established intake standards for all visit types including face-to-face and virtual visits. Assists in implementing the plan of care as requested by the Clinician including- medication reconciliation, venipuncture, injections, EKG's, nebulizer treatments, ear lavage, pain screening, stock medication administration, collection and preparation of laboratory specimens and performs CLIA Waived testing. Assists clinician during patient procedures and/or examinations including pap smear, vaginal exams and swabs, colposcopy, incision and drainage, punch biopsies, ear lavage, nebulizers, Nexplanon insertion/removal, IUD insertion/removal, toenail evulsions, and mole/skin tag removals. Properly documents and completes ICD-10 and CPT coding for services administered during the patient visit. Assists patients with appointments and referrals as needed by researching chart to find answers to referral questions (when, where, why) and future appointments at CCHS. Maintains a safe and hygienic environment for patients Cleans and sterilizes exam room after each patient visit according to CCHS and CDC protocol. Properly dons and doffs PPE as required for each type of patient encounter. Removes and processes all patient specimens collected during visit. At the end of each day, ensures proper disinfection of every exam room and work area including lab. Adequately stocks exam rooms daily according to practice standards and provider requests. Follows CCHS and CDC protocol for distinction of clean and dirty areas within the lab. • Effectively Communicates within the Center Communicates with members of the healthcare team to address patient's questions and/or concerns to the appropriate team members. Consistently identifies patients at risk and communicates with providers and nurses on emergent patient needs. Performs Other Duties as Required Answers telephones, greets patients, schedules appointments, enters refill requests, and maintains medical records. Completes nurse visits for pediatric, adult, and women's health patients. These may include blood pressure checks, A1c, INR, vaccines, medication administration via injection (B12, testosterone, Depo Provera, Depo Medrol), PPD placement, weight check, urine dipstick, urine pregnancy test. Travels to other CCHS sites to cover shortages within the department. Attends monthly site meetings, department meetings and full staff meetings as required. Consistently displays professionalism and respect during interaction with CCHS patients, staff, clinicians, and guests. Reviews open radiology and lab orders for all providers. Review chart and call diagnostic centers to look for results, if no results, send missed lab/x-ray letter. Close orders or reset due date alarms accordingly. Pre-visit planning: coordinates with provider and updates patient chart alert prior to patient appointments per provider preferences and patient needs. List specific reason for visit, last A1c if applicable, screenings needed (A1c, colonoscopy, mammogram, pap, etc.), and vaccines due. Assists provider or nurse with procedures per provider or nurse request. Regular, reliable attendance is a requirement of this job.     To assist the pathologist in dissecting and describing all surgical pathology specimens for histological processing. Under the direction of the pathologist, the pathologist assistant is responsible for the management of laboratory testing in the designated sections. Assists in the evaluation and development of new procedures, methods, quality assurance monitors, and instrumentation. Assists with cutting and processing frozen section slides whenever necessary. Assists with processing, cutting and staining of histology slides when necessary. Assist with accessioning specimens when necessary.     Responsible for providing general assistance to professional and technical personnel rendering patient care. Essential Functions: 1. Preloads, reviews charts and or EMR for scheduled patients before clinic starts. Ensures that needed lab or other results are in the EMR. 2. Schedules patient appointments. 3. Monitors appointment schedule to ensure low wait time, and that all patients are identified and not overlooked. 4. Escorts patient back to the exam room; updates the problem list and or history; obtains and records vital signs and reason for visit; prepares the patient for the provider. 5. Performs vision and hearing screens at the request of the provider. For routine visits, screenings should be done prior to the provider seeing the patient. 6. Assists provider with examination and/or procedures as appropriate. 7. Reviews EMR for lab orders, performs phlebotomy, and processes appropriate specimens for outside lab. Adheres to standards for appropriate collection of all specimens. 8. Orders lab supplies and performs in house lab tests as ordered by the provider. Performs Quality Control testing and documents in EMR and/or on Lab Quality Control forms, as appropriate. 9. Follows proper procedure to check and document expired vaccines, emergency equipment and records refrigerator temperatures for Vaccine and Labs; maintains medical supplies and vaccine inventory. 10. Performs Immunizations, EKG's, pulse oximetry, peak flows, PPDs and other tests ordered by the provider. 11. Completes referrals, including preauthorization, as appropriate; assists case management by follow through of patient compliance with alerts. 12. Returns and follow up calls to patients for the provider. Provides follow up services as requested by the provider and/or as indicated by the needs of the patient. 13. Cleans and stocks examination rooms. 14. Assists with completion of school forms, medical leave and disability forms for signature by the provider. 15. Documents telephone contacts with patients in EMR. Nonessential Functions: 16. Participates in team/staff meetings; attends in-service meetings and applicable workshops. 17. Performs any and all other duties necessary for patient care.
