Christopher Newport University company history timeline

1960

1960: Christopher Newport College established as a two-year branch of the College of William & Mary.

1961

A decade after it opened in 1961, CNU became a four-year college.

1963

1963: Newport News purchases a 75-acre tract of land for the current campus, on the north side of Shoe Lane.

1964

1964: The first building, Christopher Newport Hall, is constructed on the site of the current campus.

In 1964, the college was moved to its current location, a 75-acre (300,000 m) tract of land purchased and donated by the city.

1968

She was the first African American woman elected to Congress in 1968.

1977

1977: CNC gains independence from the College of William & Mary.

1991

The recruitment was essential, since CNU lost about 10 percent of its students in the early '90s — enrollment peaked at 5,000 in 1991 and had slipped to 4,500 by the time Trible took over.

1992

In 1992, the college became a university under the leadership of President Anthony R. Santoro, who oversaw the building of the first residence hall.

1994

The first residence hall was completed in 1994 and named in honor of Santoro and his wife, Carol.

1996

In 1996, CNU made plans to become more competitive.

2004

After an outcry from the city's public school system that it relied on hiring CNU graduates, he announced a master's in teaching program that launched in summer 2004.

2008

2008: Paul and Rosemary Trible Library opens.

2012

Among his many accomplishments, Windsor established the student counseling center, which was renamed in his honor in 2012.
