Circuit of The Americas company history timeline

2011

On January 21, 2011, a $900,000 check was posted with Travis County that permitted grading to begin.

On April 12, 2011, the track’s name was announced as “Circuit of the Americas” at a press conference.

The official name and design for the track were announced in April 2011 at a press conference.

On April 12, 2011, the track's name was announced as "Circuit of the Americas" at a press conference.

Promoter Tavo Hellmund admitted that his company had been in breach of its contract with Formula One Management since May 2011.

FEMA issued a letter on June 28, 2011, stating the project meets its floodplain management criteria.

In June 2011, the Austin city council agreed to allow the circuit to apply to the Texas Major Events Trust Fund but withheld its full endorsement requiring the circuit to pay the financial match normally borne by the local government sponsor.

Following a stop-work order in December 2011, the completion date was revised to August.

2012

In January 2012, Travis County announced that Elroy Road—one of the two primary public access roads to the circuit—would receive an upgrade to handle the volume of incoming traffic, but not before the running of the 2012 race.

On March 4, 2012, The Austin American-Statesman reported that Hellmund had launched legal proceedings against investors Bobby Epstein and Red McCombs, with Hellmund claiming that he was still a part of the management company and had not been paid since September.

Dorna later claimed that although a contract for the race between Dorna and Schwantz had existed, the contract had been terminated in July 2012 as they believed Schwantz had failed to acquire the necessary rights from the circuit to hold the race.

Bernie Ecclestone later issued an ultimatum to the owners and organizers: find a solution before the December 7 meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council or else risk being removed from the 2012 calendar.

Since its inception in 2012, the Circuit of the Americas has proven to be a key racetrack for the MotoGP competition.

His dream was turned into reality by others, and the track was ready to host its first US GP in 2012.

Sunday's race final drew over 140,000 spectators to COTA breaking the Inaugural F1 race at COTA attendance in 2012.

2013

The following month, it hosted its first Formula One race, and in 2013 its first MotoGP. There was some controversy with the 2013 MotoGP over contractual issues between racing legend Kevin Schwantz and COTA representatives.

2014

Prior to the 2014 Motorcycle Grand Prix of the Americas, the circuit announced that COTA and Schwantz had amicably settled their legal differences and reached an agreement to collaborate to promote motorcycling racing, with Schwantz taking the role as official ambassador for COTA.

2015

The only real setback came when heavy rain badly impacted the Grand Prix weekend in 2015.

Arizona’s Sarah Cattaneo – a class winner at other venues – took part each year, while Dinah Weisberg, Aurora Straus and Ashley Freiberg also appeared, with the last-named finishing seventh overall with a BMW in the 2015 event.

Her compatriot Maria Herreira also contested the COTA Moto3 event three times in 2015 to ’17, scoring a best of 17th on her first outing.

2016

Roughly 400,000 people attended the event, breaking F1's attendance record of 360,000 set at the 2016 Mexican Grand Prix.

2017

In 2017, the racetrack became home to a new soccer stadium where the soccer team Austin Bold FC and professional rugby team Austin Gilgronis play.

In 2017 Freiberg also twice finished third in class at COTA in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America series.

2018

One W Series regular who knows her way around COTA is Sabre Cook, who took part in the Formula 4 support races at the US GP in 2018.

2019

F4 returned to Austin to support the 2019 Grand Prix, this time with three women in the entry.

Clark – a past overall race winner in the championship – also won the Ladies Cup in 2019.

2020

On February 11, 2020, (perhaps as a precursor of the season to come) the opening day of IndyCar Spring Training, cold temperatures and persistent showers severely limited track time for all competitors to slow installation laps and a few experimental runs on rain tires.

On December 11, 2020, it was announced that NASCAR would run the full 3.426 miles (5.514 km) course.

2021

In October 2021, the three-day F1 United States Grand Prix event drew a record number of fans.

In less than a decade the Circuit of the Americas has established itself as one of the premier motor sporting venues in the USA, and in 2021 it hosts the first W Series event to be held outside Europe.

As of 2021, NASCAR also started using the celebrated race circuit.
