1887

Citizens Energy Group was founded in 1887 as Consumers Gas Trust at a time when the city began to use natural gas drawn from nearby gas production fields.

1893

In 1893, Thomas Edison finished construction of the world's first motion picture studio in West Orange, New Jersey.

1905

In 1905 the Perry K Plant began conversion to a steam production facility that would provide heat to large buildings and industries in the downtown area.

1906

Consumers Gas Trust became Citizens Gas in 1906 when the city purchased the majority of the company's assets.

1935

The legal operating name for the Trust is The Board of Directors for Utilities of the Department of Public Utilities of the City of Indianapolis (“The Board”). It became Citizens Gas & Coke Utility in 1935 when the City purchased all of the company's assets.

1979

Citizens Energy Corporation was launched in 1979 as oil prices went through the roof because of turbulence in the Mideast.

1999

The university opened its doors to its first class of students in 1999.

Citizens International was established in 1999 to meet the social and economic needs of developing countries.

2000

Perry K and the associated chilled water facilities were acquired by Citizens in March 2000.

2008

In 2008, the company was renamed Citizens Energy Group to reflect recent strategic changes in the company including closure of Indianapolis Coke.

2014

In 2014, Citizens acquired the water and wastewater systems of the City of Westfield.
