Construction on the new Shelby County Hospital at Alabaster began in July 1958.

1959

Shelby Memorial Hospital had its dedication on Sunday, 27 Sept 1959.

1961

However, the Shelby County Reporter, dated Thursday, March 30, 1961, informed us, "The Notice to Proceed was issued on March 24, 1961 and work will start on April 3, 1961.

1962

In February 1962 O'Neal Farris opened the Clara-Neal Motel and Restaurant in Calera, Shelby County Alabama, beside I-65 South.

1964

Birmingham Post-Herald, Wednesday, February 12, 1964, (SEE PHOTO BELOW) "Eddie Watson (left) of Montevallo checks damage caused by a fire in the concession stand of the Rebel Drive-In Theater on United States 31 five miles north of Calera.

Watson said he did not know how long the theater would be dark." By April 1964 it was open and back in operation.

The Alabaster Shopping Center was built in 1964 and had “over 3 acres of paved free parking” and “13 stores to fill your every shopping need”.

1971

The two communities saw the advantage of combining and in 1971, Siluria was merged into Alabaster.

1979

The assets of Buck Creek Industries, Inc. were liquidated in 1979, and they closed their doors permanently.

1991

Griffin before her death in 1991 that the building was originally owned by her family, located in Wilton, Shelby County Alabama.

1996

In 1996, the county agreed to sell the hospital to Baptist Health Systems for $45 million in cash.

2009

Ernestine Yarbrough, who has been living in Calera for nearly 70 years, was the first patient admitted to the Shelby Baptist Medical Center's new South Tower on December 1, 2009.
