City of Alameda company history timeline

1854

In 1854, the town was finally incorporated as a city, and in the same year Alameda’s first post office opened its doors to the public.

1864

The Encinal train station was built in 1864, and some years later establishments such as schools, churches, and stores began popping up in the area.

1869

They came to farm, to be servants to the wealthy, to build the Transcontinental Railroad (1869), to work as handymen and gardeners, and to work on the Alaska Packers fleet.

1870

A destination for recreation and sporting events, resorts along the coast line provided “baths” for swimming, giant amusement centers, ballrooms and saloons with Terrace Baths opening in 1870.

1874

A wooden cantilever bridge (1874) connected Bay Farm Island’s 30 residents to 1,800 acres at low tide and only 300 at high tide.

1882

Following rising anti-Chinese sentiment in California, the Congress passed the Chineses Exclusion Act in 1882, barring Chinese immigration.

1884

On December 27, 1884, the City of Alameda was formally organized.

The Alameda pier was built in 1884 and featured a transportation connection for rails to ferries.

1885

On January 18, 1885, the Official Seal was approved and adopted.

1894

The Central and Southern Pacific railroads merged in 1894, leading the pier to be called as the Alameda Mole.

Neptune Beach, the city’s amusement park, was built in 1894 on the San Francisco Bay shore.

1902

The Island of Alameda was created in 1902 when a tidal canal (the Estuary) was created joining Oakland’s harbor with the San Leandro Bay.

1917

But in 1917, along with six other California cities, Alameda pioneered the Council-Manager form of government.

1928

The west end’s first passenger airport began in 1928.

1935

In 1935, a China Clipper took off from Alameda on its bid to deliver the first airmail cargo across the Pacific Ocean.

1940

Alameda made its mark as a Navy city when the Alameda Naval Air Station (NAS Alameda) officially opened its doors in November 1940.

1964

The Alameda Community Fund (“Fund”) is a non profit public benefit 501(c)(3) charitable organization whose roots go back to 1964.

1970

The College of Alameda opened in 1970.

1989

San Francisco earthquake of 1989, also called Loma Prieta earthquake, major earthquake that struck the San Francisco Bay Area, California, United States, on October 17, 1989, and caused 63 deaths, nearly 3,800 injuries, and an estimated $6 billion in property damage.

2000

However, since 2000 the Alameda city government has been exerting efforts to re-develop the naval air station.

2022

2022 marks a series of imperial and anti-Asian anniversaries.
