1807

In 1807, Robert Fulton established a steamboat line from New York City to Albany.

Robert Fulton's steamship Clermont made its first trip from New York City to Albany in 1807.

1825

By 1825, the Erie Canal was completed between Albany and Lake Erie, forming a continuous water route that enabled travel and the shipment of resources across long distances.

Permanent settlement began when a group of Dutch Walloons, after leaving a few settlers to start New Amsterdam (New York City), proceeded up the Hudson to start a settlement in 1624. Its economic importance was greatly enhanced with the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825.

1831

Soon after in 1831, a 16-mile railroad opened between Albany and Schenectady.

In 1831, railroad travel between Schenectady and Albany began.

1851

Albany has been a center for higher education since the founding of the Albany Law School in 1851.

1864

In 1864, the Army Relief Bazaar held in Academy Park raised approximately $82,000 to assist the Union.

1867

Design for the New York State Capitol began in 1867.

1885

It was initially headed by a chairman, with William Finlay becoming the first mayor in 1885.

1899

The Dutch influence continued for decades. It was not completed until 1899, by which time the cost has reached $25 million, making it the most expensive government building in the country at the time.

1908

Albany's airport was constructed in the 20th century and has the distinction of being the oldest municipal airport in the United States It originally started as an airstrip in Loudonville in 1908, but was then moved to Westerlo a year later.

1921

In 1921, Democrat William S Hackett defeated Republican William Van Rensselaer in the mayor race.

1948

State University of New York, state-supported system of higher education established in 1948 with some 64 campuses located throughout the state of New York.

In 1948 the state legislature approved a system that incorporated some existing schools and called for the construction of new colleges in underserved areas.

1961

On 1 July 1961, they became respectively the Town of Albany and Shire of Albany councils following changes to the Local Government Act.

1970

1998

The City of Albany was established on 1 July 1998 with the amalgamation of the Town of Albany and the Shire of Albany.

On 1 July 1998, the two councils amalgamated to form the City of Albany.

2005

A new administration building and Civic Centre was constructed and opened in 2005 on North Road.

2008

Prior to 2008, the Industrial Development Agency issued tax exempt bonds for such projects, but the Agency’s ability to do so ended when State legislation governing this lapsed.

2009

In 2009 the city joined the entire Hudson valley in observing the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage on the Half Moon up the river.

2014

The steadfast goal of my administration since 2014 is to create a more vibrant City, neighborhood by neighborhood.
