The symbolic heart of Albemarle is the intersection of Second and Main Streets, locally known as “the Square”. Commanding the highest point in the downtown, this intersection served as the site of the original courthouse for Stanly County in the 1800’s.
In 1825, Mathias Barringer discovered gold on his property, near present-day Pfeiffer University.

In 1842, land that had been owned by the Hearne family was divided into lots and sold.
Albemarle was established in 1857.
Incorporated in 1857, the City is named for George Monck, the Duke of Albemarle, one of eight Lords Proprietors granted the province of Carolina in 1663 by King Charles II. The City’s growth in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was powered by large textile mills.
In 1885, Pfeiffer University was founded in Stanly.
With a history that extends back to 1887, today’s Albemarle is a leading global producer of catalyst solutions and performance chemicals.
In 1893, the second courthouse structure was built on the site of the current mini-park.
Utilities: The City’s electric-distribution system was created in 1910 and currently serves over 11,000 customers.
The first hospital in Stanly County was Badin Hospital, which opened in 1918.
Construction on the first paved road out of Albemarle was begun in 1923.
The first private hospital in Albemarle opened in 1924.
Albemarle got its first public hospital in 1929.
The Mitchell School was converted into Pfeiffer Junior College in 1935.
According to the 1939 WPA Guide to the Old North State, “the move was actuated because various young bloods had attempted to drive their horses and buggies up the courthouse steps.”

Ethyl opened a plant in Pasadena, Texas in 1952.
As Pfeiffer College, it was accredited as a four-year institution in 1959.
Stanly Technical Institute came into existence in 1971.
In 1973 it was demolished after the present courthouse was built further down South Second Street.
The city is presently served by Stanly Memorial Hospital, which opened in 1981.

2015 Albemarle acquired Rockwood Holdings to create one of the world’s premier specialty chemicals companies, with market-leading positions across four high-margin businesses: lithium, catalysts, bromine and surface treatment.
