The actual establishment of the community of Arlington took place in 1876, along the Texas and Pacific Railway.
In those days, there was a train depot downtown (also the site of a famed Old-West style shootout.) It was there that Arlington came into being with the arrival of the first train in 1876.
At Austin, the largest campus (founded 1881) in the University of Texas System, about 100 undergraduate degree programs and about 180 graduate degree programs are available in 15 schools and colleges.
A mineral well, whose water was reputed to have curative properties, was drilled in 1892 at the intersection of Center and Main.
When residents decided they needed a college, in 1895 they publicly funded Arlington College – UT Arlington today.
When the Interurban, an electric trolley system, went rolling down Abram Street in downtown Arlington in 1902, linking it to both Fort Worth and Dallas, the city billed itself as the natural home of traveling salesmen.

The Fundamental Baptist Bible Institute was chartered in 1939, later becoming Arlington Baptist College.
Once known for its cotton ginning and agricultural products, Arlington is primarily an industrial and commercial centre; it has automotive and aerospace industries that developed after 1950, with an accompanying rapid increase in population.
