City of Beaumont company history timeline

1838

Beaumont officially became a town on December 16, 1838, and was a center for cattle raisers and farmers in its early years.

Beaumont, city, seat (1838) of Jefferson county, southeastern Texas, United States, at the head of navigation on the Neches River (an arm of the Sabine-Neches Waterway), 85 miles (137 km) east-northeast of Houston.

1901

On January 10, 1901, the Lucas Gusher on Spindletop Hill exploded, shooting oil hundreds of feet in the air.

Restaurants, hotels and retail establishments were overwhelmed as the city's population grew from 9,000 in January 1901 to 30,000 in March 1901, leading to a Texas-sized building boom.

1923

The Lucas Gusher Monument and the reconstructed Gladys City–Spindletop Boomtown commemorate the oil strike; the Spindletop–Gladys City Museum is operated by Lamar University (1923). The Texas Energy Museum also celebrates Beaumont’s role in the development of the Texas oil industry.

The university opened in 1923 as South Park Junior College.

1932

In 1932 the name was changed to Lamar College, for Republic of Texas president Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar.

1941

Commemorating his discovery of oil at Spindletop Hill, the Lucas Gusher Monument, a 58-foot pink granite obelisk, was erected and dedicated in 1941.

1949

The Lamar University System, created in 1983, ceased to exist in 1995, when the campuses became separate members of the state university system. It was made a four-year college in 1949, and its name was changed to Lamar State College of Technology.

1975

The Library as a historical research repository was established in 1975, and has significant archival collections, genealogy records, and Texas history books.

The technology institute was founded in 1990.
