City of Bend, Oregon company history timeline
In January 1905, the citizens dropped the farewell part and nailed up the sign that said welcome to Bend, Oregon.
The gradually growing community was incorporated as a city in 1905 with approximately 500 people.
The initial source of electricity for the city was a dam on the Deschutes River constructed in 1910.
Vast timber resources influenced a railroad boom (1911), sawmills were built, and wood industries developed.
By 1915, two large companies, Shevlin-Hixon and Brooks-Scanlon, started building lumber mills south of downtown Bend.
In 1929, the city of Bend adopted the manager/council form of government.
Bend’s filing system is preserved in both the documents numbers (file “25-02 RAILROAD SIDING 1931.pdf” = Drawer 25, survey #2) and in the structure of the online directories.
