1800

After 1800 growth was spurred by increased ferry services and the advent of the railroad.

1804

Robert Camp­bell was born on Feb­ru­ary 12, 1804, in his family’s home, Augh­a­lane.

1841

Despite the vast dif­fer­ence in age (Vir­ginia was 13 and Robert was 31), the two fell in love and began a six-year long-dis­tance courtship before they mar­ried in 1841.

1844

Camden, city, seat (1844) of Camden county, New Jersey, United States, on the Delaware River, there bridged to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

1846

The city of Campbell was founded by a true pioneer, Benjamin Campbell, who arrived in 1846.

1851

The historic heart of the city is located on the original 160-acre ranch property which he purchased in 1851.

Benjamin Campbell acquired 160 acres in 1851 and planted them with hay and grain.

1854

The “Silicon Valley” has been described as a phenomenon that includes a workforce of 1.38 million people covering 1854 square miles.

1887

Later, he and his wife, Mary Rucker Campbell, subdivided acreage to create a town and railroad station stop in 1887.

1895

Campbell required a bank, with all the business, and the Bank of Campbell was established at the corner of Campbell and Central Avenues in 1895.

The building still stands on the northeast corner of Campbell Avenue at Central Avenue. As a result, the Bank of Campbell opened in 1895.

1899

Shipbuilding on the waterfront began about 1899.

1902

The form of what was to become the City of Campbell began in 1902 when the Youngstown Iron, Sheet and Tube Company established operations on the banks of the Mahoning River in Coitsville Township.

1914

J.T. Dorrance became president of the company in 1914.

1926

The original boom town ultimately matured, and in 1926 officially became known as the City of Campbell in honor of its founding father James Anson Campbell.

1927

Camden is the site of an urban campus (1927) of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey.

1931

When Hugh died in 1931, Hazlett was declared of “unsound mind,” throw­ing into ques­tion the fate of the Camp­bell estate.

1938

While a lengthy court bat­tle broke out among the Camp­bells var­i­ous rela­tions fol­low­ing Hazlett’s death in 1938, some St Louisans were more con­cerned about the house and its con­tents.

1943

The Muse­um opened in 1943.

1952

With the encroachment of surrounding cities, residents supported incorporation in 1952.

In 1952, Campbell was officially incorporated as a city.

1967

City Hall remained where it was until the bond issue of 1967 provided the dollars needed to build the current City Hall.

Camden County College (1967) is at nearby Blackwood.

1992

The New Jersey State Aquarium opened in 1992.

2004

2006

In 2006 Premier Foods, the United Kingdom’s largest food producer, purchased Campbell Soup’s subsidiaries in both the United Kingdom and Ireland.

2008

In 2008 Campbell entered a licensing agreement with Wolfgang Puck Worldwide, Inc., that allowed the company to sell Wolfgang Puck soup, stock, and broth products, thereby expanding Campbell’s organic soup offerings.

In 2008 the company pledged $10 million to the city of Camden’s Public Benefit Plan for community improvement.
