In August 1852, Daniel Harmon Brush, John Asgill Conner, and Doctor William Richart bought 360 acres of land along the right-of-way for the Illinois Central Railroad with the intention of founding a new town.
The first train through the town on the mainline north from Cairo, on Independence Day, 1854, was the occasion for a community celebration.
The mountain was named after Captain Richard Sopris, who visited the area in 1860 on a mapping and gold exploration trip.

In 1957 the university founded two academic centres, in Alton and East St Louis.
The first doctorate was awarded in 1959.
The success of these centres spurred the creation of the Edwardsville campus, located on bluffs along the Mississippi River, which opened in 1965.
