1800

The City of Philadelphia's photo archive contains approximately 2 million photographic records that date from the late 1800's.

1818

The first church in Mercer County was built of logs in 1818, near the present site of Mendon.

1820

The oldest town in the county is Rockford, founded in 1820 and named Shanesville, by the founder Anthony Shane, half French and Indian who operated a trading post on the St Marys River, prior to 1820.

1824

Mercer County was set apart and established as a separate county, January 2, 1824.

The first school was started in 1824 at Shanesville, now Rockford.

1834

Celina grew slowly after its founding in 1834.

The city of Celina, known as the county seat of Mercer County, was established in 1834 by James Watson Riley.

1846

A Tale of Two Settlements The first settlers arrived in this area in 1846 for the black fertile prairie soil of North Texas where cotton was a key crop.

1848

Originally, St Mary’s was the Mercer County seat of government, but with the Ohio government’s creation of Auglaize County in 1848, St Mary’s became part of the new county, and Celina became the county seat of Mercer County.

1880

The Methodist church was built in 1880, and also doubled as the school for a while.

The primary reason for this population growth was the discovery of oil and natural gas deposits during the 1880’s.

1885

By 1885, a general store, mill, and a drug store had been opened in “Old Celina”.

1886

In 1886, Celina contained three newspaper offices, five churches, and two banks.

1902

The establishment of the St Louis and San Francisco Railroad in March of 1902 forced the communities of Rock Hill and Richland to merge forming the Town of Prosper.

1903

1906

In 1906, a 2 story brick school building was completed on the campus where the Celina Independent School District Administrative offices are now.

1907

In 1907, the town was officially incorporated with Will Newsom serving as the first mayor.

1910

The businesses looked about the same until 1910, when J. Fred Smith (who later became the first mayor of University Park in Dallas) began getting ready to lay off the square and erect buildings around it.

1914

The Town of Prosper was incorporated in 1914 with a commission form of government and a population of 500.

1916

In 1916, another 2 story brick building with a basement was finished and school began in it.

1962

1980

In 1980, the introduction of light industry, combined with the growth of the north Texas area, led to a comeback for Prosper.

1996

Bonds were passed in he spring of 1996 for a new high school and an addition to the elementary.

2000

In 2000, Celina was the largest city in Mercer County, with a population of 10,303 people.

2001

In September 2001, bonds were passed for a new elementary school, additions to the high school, new vocational facilities, and renovations to the track.
