City of Chandler, Arizona company history timeline

1913

Hotel San Marcos was inaugurated in a gala opening on November 22, 1913, and the occasion was graced by 500 guests including Vice President Thomas Marshall and Governor George P Hunt.

1914

Chandler High School was established in 1914.

1916

The Suhwaro Hotel originally opened in 1916 as a cheap alternative to the San Marcos Hotel.

1918

Chandler High School's first graduating class was in 1918, and it included Bruce Robinson, Nora Chitwood and Earnest Koch.

On Boston Street, the former First National Bank Building and the Arrow Hardware Store were built in 1918.

1919

The First National Bank Building, constructed in 1919, is the only Neo-Classical-style building in downtown Chandler.

1920

By 1920, the population of Chandler had risen to over 1,000 residents, and automobiles had become the mainstay of transportation.

1921

Chandler High School was dedicated in 1921.

1924

By the time the Chamber had reorganized, it had outgrown the Monroe Building, and in 1924, a new meeting place was built on the southeast corner of Arizona Avenue and Buffalo Street.

1940

Chandler's unit of the Arizona National Guard was first activated in 1940, at which time it became necessary to have an armory in Chandler.

1945

On August 14, 1945, Chandler residents celebrated late into the night when they received news of the end of the war.

1948

By the time the National Guard was reactivated in 1948, it had outgrown the McCormick Building.

2008

In early 2008, Chandler's oldest church congregation said goodbye to its home for 94 years and moved into a new building in the south part of Chandler.

2012

It was in 2012 when the building reopened as the headquarters of the Chandler Museum, housing collections of archives, exhibit galleries and the museum's offices and research center.

2013

The hotel underwent an $8.5 million renovation in time for its 100th anniversary in 2013.

2020

Chandler is Arizona's fourth largest city with a population of 265,797 (September 1, 2020) citizens and continues to be one of Arizona's fastest-growing communities.
