Equipment operator job at City of Columbus
Definition Under general supervision, this EquipmentOperator II position is responsible for the operation of a variety of heavy or highly complex motorized equipment involving difficult problems of operation and/or great consequences of error. This position performs related duties as required.
The EquipmentOperator will be operating cranes, backhoes, front-end loaders, hydro-excavators or related equipment, driving dump trucks and hauling dirt, performing minor preventive maintenance on equipment, and preparing equipment and vehicle logs. General knowledge of the mechanical operations of powered construction and maintenance equipment is a plus.
Location: 1250 Fairwood Ave, Columbus, Ohio 43206
The scheduled shift will be 7:00 am-3:30 pm Monday-Friday.
The salary range for this position is: $30.01-$38.10 per hour.

Examples of Work

Operates asphalt paver to distribute and disperse pavement;
Operates graders to grade berm, scrape and reshape alleys, and to drag patch asphalt;
Operates street sweepers;
Operates semi tractor-trailer trucks and sludge-hauling trucks;
Operates mixing and screening equipment used in composting wastewater treatment residuals;
Operates front-end loaders;
Operates heavy tow trucks with mounted power wrecker booms and heavy boom/hoist trucks;
Operates commercial vehicle with trailer;
Operates and/or drives other equipment as assigned;
Drives commercial motor vehicles that require a Commercial Driver's License;
Performs minor preventative maintenance on equipment/vehicles;
Checks equipment for proper levels and amounts of various fluids and other critical materials such as crankcase oil, water, air in tires, and brake fluids before and after use;
Prepares operator's daily vehicle report noting conditions of various operating systems and levels and amounts of important fluids or other materials;
Cleans vehicles and equipment after use;
Acts as a lead worker at assigned work site(s);
Assists with snow and ice removal on an as-needed basis.
Minimum Qualifications
Two (2) years of experience operating a commercial motor vehicle or other heavy construction equipment.
Possession of a valid Class A commercial motor vehicle operator's license allowing the operation of vehicles with air brakes. Some positions may require the following endorsement(s): Hazardous Materials (H), Tanker (N), and tank vehicles transporting hazardous materials (X).

Purpose of Classification:
The purpose of this classification is to operate track or rubber-tired construction equipment with specialized functions related to maintenance, construction, and operational activities where the operation of complex mechanisms requires the highest degree of skill, dexterity, and finesse, and where work is performed to exacting tolerances.

Essential Functions:

Operates excavator, track hoe, and backhoe to perform skilled digging and trenching for maintenance, upkeep, and construction projects for public utilities and other infrastructure, where exacting tolerances and specification are required; and controls placement of equipment and determines optimum approach to each digging scenario in order to minimize destruction of property and avoid electric, water, sewer, and other public utility lines.
Operates a track or rubber-tired loader with large volume and weight capacities to load materials into trucks or move them over short distances; positions equipment and controls height, angle, and position of scoop for optimum delivery of payload; and controls amount and weight of materials being lifted to avoid exceeding equipment capacity. Operates and maintains diesel powered E-Z-Pack hydraulic unloading mechanisms.
Operates motor-grader, scraper, and excavator with blade attachment to set gradients for large construction and maintenance projects such as roads, landscaping, embankments, and other projects requiring exacting specifications related to slope, angle, and pitch; determines appropriate settings and adjusts blades for height, angle, and pitch to achieve desired outcome; and maneuvers equipment and operates mechanisms to skillfully set gradient, smooth surfaces, and spread materials.

JOB SUMMARY

MANUAL DEXTERITY: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as automated machinery and equipment, hand tools, mechanic tools, power tools, and pipe/fitting supplies. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

The Heavy EquipmentOperator is responsible for the loading, pushing, and transferring of solid waste material in our transfer station. The ideal candidate will have the ability to completely maintain this transfer station in an efficient and professional manner. They will possess both a team work mentality as well as self-motivating traits.
Additional Responsibilities: Heavy EquipmentOperatorOperate heavy duty equipment such as Rail Truck, Compactors, excavators and bucket loaders (yellow iron equipment), with various other small machinery
Routinely set up and inspect equipment prior to operation
Have knowledge of machine capabilities and limitations
Observe hand signals, grade stakes, or other markings when operating machines to perform work duties in compliance of safety specifications
Receive written and oral instruction regarding material movement
Move materials over short distances, around facility
Maintain an efficient flow by loading transfer trailers to target load weight and reduce traffic congestion
Create and maintain inclines or ramps
Requirements and Qualifications:
Work Environment:
Daily exposure to physical environment including odors, loud noises, weather elements, etc.
Requirements: Heavy EquipmentOperator
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and legally eligible to work in the United States.
High school/GED education completed, higher education is a plus.
Minimum 2 years experience as EquipmentOperator .
Experience from the sanitation industry is strongly preferred.
Fluency in English , Spanish bilingual is a plus.

Responsibilities
The driver is responsible for safely operating the truck in compliance with IWS's safety standards as well as OSHA regulations.
This is a full time, year-round

Follow all company SOPs and continuously monitor for safety and service-related issues with the equipment and report any issues to their Supervisor or Dispatch.
All IWS employees are expected to be responsible and accountable for the safety for themselves, their colleagues, the trucks, and other equipment and property. Drivers must immediately notify Supervisor or Safety of any incidents, accidents, injuries, or property damage.
Operators could be be responsible for operating a modified articulating dump trucks and other equipment, transporting waste from an offloading facility onsite to the Landfill cell safely and efficiently.
Heavy equipmentoperation and articulating dump truck (rock truck) experience preferred.
