City of Compton company history timeline

1888

The City of Compton was officially incorporated on May 11, 1888.

The new city, with a population of 500 people, held its first City Council meeting on May 14, 1888 in the home of William H. Carpenter.

1921

The city adopted racially restrictive covenants in 1921 to bar African Americans and other people of color from the municipality.

1927

A community college was established in Compton in 1927.

1929

The city began to shed the effects of the Great Depression of 1929, and the population increased.

1933

On March 10, 1933, a devastating earthquake took lives, toppled schools and caused major damage to the main business district.

1948

They took advantage of the United States Supreme Court’s ban on restrictive covenants in 1948 and began to purchase houses in Compton.

1988

In 1988, N****s Wit’ Attitude, or NWA, the famous Compton-based rap group, released Straight Outta Compton, which profiled both gang life and police brutality in the city.

1989

In December 1989, just over a year after the release of Straight Outta Compton, Ice Cube left the group over a royalty dispute.

1990

N.W.A, now with five members (Eazy-E, Doctor Dre, DJ Yella, MC Ren, and The D.O.C.), released their extended-play record (EP) 100 Miles and Runnin’ on August 14, 1990.

1992

Gang violence peaked shortly after the riots following Rodney King’s infamous arrest and beating by police in 1992.

Compton’s easy accessibility to and from five freeways and the affordability of its housing (median home price was $407,000 in December 2006) has drawn additional residents and sparked the interest of developers.

2007

In February 2007, construction began on the Gateway Towne Center, a 51-acre mixed-use commercial/residential project on Alameda Boulevard that will include a Target, Staples, 24-Hour Fitness, Marshalls, Home Depot, and Chili’s, among others.

The center is expected to open in October 2007.

2015

In 2015 a biopic about the group, Straight Outta Compton, was released in theaters to warm commercial and critical reception.
