General EnvironmentalTechnician 3 (Floriculturist) GENERAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT Under general supervision, performs a variety of tasks in connection with the propagation, cultivation, care, and exhibition of native and tropical plants in greenhouses, buildings, and park areas.
Examples of Duties
* Performs the individual tasks involved in assignments such as planting seeds, making cuttings and grafts, layering and setting out plants, bulbs and tubers.
* Pots and repots plants.
* Cultivates, fertilizes, and waters plants.
* Prunes shrubs and vines and collects seeds.
* Regulates the temperature of greenhouses and conservatories.
* Lays-out and plants, cultivates, mulches and edges flower beds throughout the season.
* Carries out plans for arranging flowers for show.
* Supervises the work of a small group of helpers who prepares soil, water, fertilizes and cultivates plants, prunes or cuts back, sets out and/or stores bulbs and tubers; pots plants, and cuts back perennials for the winter, as required.
* Assigns tasks and instructs workers.
* Inspects work in process and upon completion.
* Repairs small tools and equipment used in cultivating flowers and plants.
* Applies pesticides to land or plant life.
Minimum Qualifications
Required
* High School Diploma or G.E. D.
* Two (2) years experience in grounds maintenance work and landscape and/or greenhouse work.
* One (1) year of supervisory experience.
Preferred
* Preferably completion of two years of college coursework in horticulture, floriculture or related field.
Equivalency
* Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.
LICENSE, CERTIFICATION AND OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
* Employees in this class will be required, when necessary, to operate a Motor Vehicle. Valid State of Michigan Operator License is required.
* Employees in this class will be required to obtain a valid State of Michigan Commercial Pesticide Certification with the categories: Core, 3B (ornamental), and 7E (interiors cape) and 6 (right of way) within six months of entry into this classification.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
* Propagation and cultivation of native and tropical plants.
* Greenhouse methods used in protection of plants from diseases, insects, and pests.
SKILL IN:
* Planting and propagation; seed germination, plant division, plant cuttings such as leaf, stem and tip cuttings.
* Observation to determine growth and detect insects, disease, watering issues, and other relating issues pertaining to plant growth and health.
ABILITY TO:
* Operate a personal computer.
* Display mechanical aptitude.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
* Work is performed in greenhouses, conservatories and outdoors with exposure to all seasonal weather conditions and to pesticides. Work involves frequent lifting, bending and resting on knees.

Work with the project manager to understand the contract needs and specifications of clients and their customers and develop appropriate solutions.
Inspect a wide range of habitats, both natural and disturbed, and assess their condition, health and functionality according to client specifications.
Identify local species, understand their typical characteristics and recognize common diseases and pests.
Train and mentor teammates.
Qualifications
Education and Qualifications:

Possession of an Minnesota Department of Agriculture Certified Pesticide Applicators License is required.
Prescribed burn experience and S130/S190 certification.

A degree in biology, botany, ecology, conservation, environmental science, or related fields.
Three to five years of experience in ecological restoration.
Driver's license and clean driving record are required.

Experience with operating heavy equipment, forestry mower, tractor, etc. preferred.

Groundwater & Environmental Services, Inc. (GES) , an industry leader with a reputation for excellence in providing environmental consulting, engineering, compliance, and technical field services to clients in diverse market sectors, seeks a Staff Geologist or Environmental Scientist to support fieldwork and environmental remediation project activities in New Hudson, MI and the Great Lakes region.
Position Expectations:
Responsible for most aspects of case management/project management with senior oversight.
Prepares technically accurate, complete and concise work plans based on evaluation of site data needs.
Performs or manages the implementation of project work plans including staff briefing, scheduling, subcontractor coordination and sample collection.
Evaluates, analyzes and interprets technical data relative to project-specific goals, creates and interprets accurate data display graphs and figures, completes basic fate and transport analysis, and identifies data gaps and data needs leading to development of a Conceptual Site Model.
Works with and mentors junior staff to ensure all resources are in place for proper fieldwork and reporting execution.
Develops and manages budgets, evaluates budget vs. plan and analyzes cost control efficiencies.
Communicates with clients, third party and regulatory agents regarding project status, schedules and compliance issues.
Ensures adherence to client and corporate contract specifications in all activities including Health, Safety, Security, and Environment.
Skills & Requirements
Must be agreeable to regular travel, including overnight travel, in the Great Lakes Region (PA, OH, MI, IL and MN).
A Bachelor's degree or higher in Geology, Environmental Science or related discipline.
1-5 years of related experience. Experience must include hands on field and office based in environmental consulting field. Case management experience on retail petroleum and/or industrial projects preferred.
Must possess excellent communication and technical writing skills and be able to independently prepare a complete deliverable report with a focus on QA/QC.
Must have working knowledge of IL environmental regulations.
Experience associated with environmental permitting that includes natural resources inventory, wetland delineations, species assessments, and environmental sampling (chemical and biological) is a plus.
Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, Adobe, geologic logging/cross section programs required.
