This is a full-time, non-exempt position that provides excellent City employee benefits, including health, dental, vacation, and sick leave, plus a generous retirement plan specifically for uniformed public safety officers. Once hired, all lateral officers must successfully pass a one-year probationary period after completion of Field Training. Lateral officers are eligible to start at a higher salary step equal to their certified years of prior primary law enforcement experience (up to 17 years).
Minimum Qualifications
To become a Police Officer with the City of Falls Church Police Department, you must meet the minimum qualifications for law enforcement office as defined in VA Code § 15.2-1705 and other hiring requirements.
Age: must be at least 20 years and 6 months of age at the time of application and at least 21 by the date of hire.
Character/Background Assessment: applicants that continue past the exam/interview phase will undergo a comprehensive background investigation and character check. Individual situations will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis; however, a favorable driving record and a clean criminal history are essential. The police department retains the right to reject any applicant for any arrest and/or conviction that occurred at any age (unless the arrest or criminal charge against them has been expunged, pursuant to Virginia Code § 15.2-1705).
All aspects of an applicant's background are considered when making a final hiring determination, however applicants who have past or current behavior(s) as listed below may be disqualified:
Have ever engaged in any activity that would support a felony conviction
Have convictions or charges pending for misdemeanor crimes relating to theft, domestic violence, assault, crimes of moral turpitude (such as lying under oath or falsifying official documents), any crime requiring registration on the Sex Offender Registry at any age, or any crime which carries a penalty of prohibiting the ownership of, possession, or control of a firearm.
Have recent convictions for D.U.I., D.W.I, or multiple convictions for speeding and other moving violations.
Have associations with or support in any fashion any criminal gang, extremist-racist, Anti-Semitic group, or any group that has stated a desire to overthrow the United States Government.
Have recent history of bankruptcy, substantial debts with collection agencies, or poor credit record that indicates poor financial literacy.
Illicit use of any Schedule 1 drugs (illegal drugs never prescribed for any legitimate purpose), Schedule 2 drugs (medicinal drugs not used in a manner consistent with what they are prescribed for), or anabolic steroids (unless prescribed by a physician) within three years of the date of application.
Having sold, distributed, or manufactured any prescription or illegal drugs without legal authorization.
Any previous revocation or denial of certification as Police Officer or a suspension of current certified status.
Failure to provide a fully completed, honestly reported, Personal History Statement, including intentional withholding of information on any application, interview, or paperwork associated with the position
Citizenship: must be a United States citizen. Permanent resident aliens with an application for naturalization filed and pending with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services may also be considered.
Driver's License: must possess or be able to obtain a valid driver's license by date of hire. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
Education: must have a high school diploma or passed the GED.
Physical Condition: must be in good physical condition as determined by a licensed medical professional provided by the City of Falls Church Human Resources Department. This medical assessment may include tests on physical agility, near vision, color blindness, darkness perception, night vision, and peripheral vision.
Substance Use:
No use of marijuana from the date of application, regardless of location use (includes states/counties where usage may be legal).
No use of any tobacco or marijuana products from the date of hire. The City of Falls Church Police Department is a drug and tobacco free work environment.
Candidates who fail their pre-employment drug screening will be disqualified.
Work Agreements:
Must sign an employment agreement contract if hired.
Must be able to work 12.5 hour rotating shifts.
Successful completion of field training and one (1) year of probationary period after field training.
Lateral candidates must have a Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Law Enforcement Officer certification or law enforcement certification in any other state AND ability to obtain a DCJS training waiver.
Hiring and Selection Process:
There is a multi-phase hiring and selection process to determine applicant eligibility for becoming an officer with the City of Falls Church Police Department. Applicants must pass each phase of the process to be considered as a candidate eligible for hire.
1. Apply - Applicants complete and submit the City of Falls Church Job Application.
2. Interview - Eligible candidates will be invited to the Police Department to participate in a panel interview. All active, local, state and federal law enforcement officers, excluding Military Police Officers, are exempt from taking the police entrance exam.
3. Background Investigation - Selected candidates will undergo a comprehensive background investigation and character check that includes fingerprinting, polygraph examination, and psychological assessment.
4. Final Interviews - Selected candidates will be invited to interview with City of Falls Church Chief of Police Shahram Fard.
5. Candidates Notified of Job Offers - Offers are contingent on medical assessment and drug screening for final employment.
Salary and Benefits
Effective July 1, 2025, the salary for newly hired Police Officers starts at $66,460. Certified officers may begin at a higher salary step matching their years of primary law enforcement experience (up to 17 years), with a maximum starting salary of $106,649.
Police Officers who work between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM are eligible for additional shift pay differential. Responsibilities:
Performs as technical assistant to the Building Official, enforcing the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, the Virginia Rehabilitation Code, the Virginia Maintenance Code and the Virginia Amusement Devise Regulations;
Performs electrical plan reviews and assists with commercial combination plan reviews (building, plumbing, energy efficiency, fire alarm and fire suppression);
Performs residential inspections for one- and two-family dwellings;

Performs maintenance code inspections of existing buildings on a complaint basis;
Coordinates with the Fire Marshal, the Health Department and city staff on full code and maintenance code inspections;

Assists in scheduling inspections and coordinates with other inspectors to maximize use of time;

Performs related tasks as required.
Qualifications:
Graduation from high school and certified by the Commonwealth of Virginia or ICC as an Electrical code inspector or plan reviewer;
At least four years of experience in the construction or inspection related field with thorough knowledge of all types of building construction materials, methods, and stages of construction.
Demonstrated ability to read and interpret plans accurately and to compare them with construction in progress, identify color utility markings and distinguish conductor color coding,
Strong verbal and written communication skills to contact building owners, contractors and the public and affect satisfactory working relationships;
Demonstrated steadfastness and tact in enforcing building ordinances and codes.
Ability to obtain electrical examiner certification and those of additional trades;
Combination residential inspector certification and commercial electrical inspector certification plus at least one additional commercial inspection certification.
A valid driver's license in the state of residence is required.

Provide first aid if needed.
Ensure children are being dismissed to authorized individuals.

We are seeking an individual with leadership qualities who can provide training on water treatment processes and systems and overall plant operations. Work involves scheduling operators, dispatching service calls for after-hours operations, calibrating plant equipment, monitoring physical and chemical water treatment processes, and managing the wastewater system within the plant. Maintains operational logs and performs routine laboratory tests, analyzes results and makes adjustments, as needed. Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on water treatment equipment and systems. Coordinates activities with other departments and offices to maintain normal operation of the water distribution and sewer collection systems. Capable of maintaining the plant equipment operation and controlling mechanical, electrical, electronic chemical equipment involved in pumping and/or treating water to ensure accurate measurement of water treatment processes. The employee will also be responsible for determining and adjusting chemical feeds as required. Ability to maintain records of chemical usage and daily pumpage for monthly reporting and routine preventive maintenance. The employee will be responsible for interacting with customers by answering questions and providing general information about the Department. Salary & Benefits:
The annual salary range is $130,000 - $160,000 and depends upon qualifications. Deputy Clerk of Circuit Court III - Criminal Courtroom

The Deputy Clerk III will be in the criminal division which shall include courtroom. Must be able to work up under stress. This position is responsible for providing initially criminal court administration assistance to judges, attorneys, defendants, and court personnel. This class is responsible preparing all necessary paperwork to reflect judge's orders whether in criminal or if necessary civil proceedings. This will allow our criminal and assistant supervisors to manage effectively, efficiently for the Clerk's office, and have back up which will allow continuation to operate seamlessly with confidence and security. Deputy Clerk III must multitask and prioritize in order to be able to start and stop what they are doing. The Deputy Clerk III must have extensive knowledge preferably circuit court experience but will train having prior general or juvenile domestic courtroom experience.
The Deputy Clerk III, involves entering various data and information into state computer systems, including but not limited to: case entry must be precise with certifying cases from Juvenile Domestic and Relations and General District Court appeals, direct indictments and audit, researching guidelines, and composing and typing a variety of routine documents. This class involves organizing and maintaining departmental records and updating the case management and financial management systems. This class works within a general outline of work to be performed; develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.
Document authentication of legal documents through the certification process. Preparation, gather and organize all required judicial paperwork with accuracy and in accordance with appropriate policies and statutory regulations with a broader skill level.
Performs job duties at an advanced level based on circuit court knowledge and experience, including but not limited to; resolving each specific hearing for a various number of defendants.
Understanding process for Circuit Court Capias when receiving and examining defendant's paperwork. Coordination of the placement of defendant's circuit court docket that are required to attend their circuit court arraignment. Expect to be able and qualified in handling court reporter, defendants, and witness's oaths. Must transcribe swiftly and accurately judge's orders. Must be able review and examine violations working with other agencies, i.e., Probation and Parole for accuracy. Responsible for the chain of custody by accurately and precisely cataloguing evidence.
Operate photocopy equipment, cashier registers, bar code scanners, document scanners, imaging stations, and/or record indexing and verifying stations. Receipt fees, taxes, fines, restitution, and responsible for loading court costs for various court matters onto state systems.
Customer service is essential and expected responding to our customers' questions whether by emails, telephone calls and front counter.
Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires a bachelor's degree or any equivalent combination of education and experience in business administration, public administration, or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of four years of related, full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: None.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

The City of Falls Church Sheriff's Office is recruiting for a part-time, 20-hour per week Deputy Sheriff with Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement certification. This Deputy will perform court security, prisoner transportation, civil process, traffic enforcement and other law enforcement functions including emergency response in a busy and growing small agency and jurisdiction environment.
The City of Falls Church is an independent municipality located six miles from the nation's capital situated between the large urban counties of Arlington and Fairfax with its own court, clerk system and sheriff's office. The City is known for its urban village community structure, quality customer and resident service, a nationally ranked school system and extensive community activities.
Required, No Exceptions:
Mandatory and comprehensive background checks to include all past employment and fingerprint criminal history. The Sheriff's Office may reject any applicant based on any of the Sheriff's Office's interpretation of any aspect or finding of the investigation.
