City of Farmington history

Soon after, in 1825, Doctor Ezekiel Webb established the first Post Office and became Farmington’s first postmaster and physician.

In 1827, Farmington Township was established by the Legislative Council of the Michigan Territory.

The first school was established several years later in 1828.

Founded in 1834, the City of Farmington has a long, storied history.

Farmington was officially incorporated as a village in 1867.

In 1868, the 3.5 million-acre Navajo Reservation was established, covering half of San Juan County, west and southwest of Farmington.

After 1879 Anglo pioneers settled in the San Juan Basin, a place ideal for fruit growing and ranching.

Later in the 1890's, it was moved to its present site and renamed Lagoon.

In December of 1892, Farmington was incorporated as a city with a population of 1,180.

Farmington was incorporated in 1901.

In the 1950’s development of a gas pipeline from the San Juan Basin to the West Coast brought boom times and Farmington’s population grew from less than 5,000 to more than 35,000.

On the first of April 1997, Farmington’s municipal government marked its 125th year of serving the needs and interests of the community.

The Farmington Public Library, in an award-winning new building which opened in 2003, has the words "Summer Solstice" and "Winter Solstice” engraved at precise locations on its rotunda floor which are lighted by sunlight passing through a small window exactly on those dates.
